Many of us, at least once in our life times, would have been victims to a very common ailment - food poisoning.
Food is the main source of energy that is required for the survival of living organisms. And humans have invented a mind-numbing array of dishes to choose from when it comes to food.
So, what happens when your main source of energy becomes the main reason for your sickness?

Food poisoning is a food-borne disease caused by the bacteria, toxins, virus, etc., found in food items, which is consumed by the sufferer.
The most common bacteria responsible for food poisoning are E. coli, Listeria and Salmonella. And viruses such as norovirus, sapovirus, rotavirus, and astrovirus also cause food poisoning.
Some of the more pronounced symptoms of food poisoning include pain in the abdomen and rectum, chills, dehydration, fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, loss of appetite, etc.
So, here are a few myths and false beliefs about food poisoning that you must not take seriously, have a look!

1. “Food Poisoning Is Caused By The Previous Meal You Ate”
While it is possible that the most recent meal you had could be the cause, it is also a fact that food-borne microbes take at least a few hours to make you fall sick, so the cause for your food poisoning can also be the meal you had a day ago!

2. “If You Peel Fruits And Vegetables, You Are Safe From Food Poisoning”
You can still get affected with the condition after peeling away the top layer of fruits and vegetables, as the pulp can surely contain a lot of microbes if not cleaned well.

3. “Vegetarians Don't Get Food Poisoning”
Many people believe the above myth to be true, as they feel that animal products have more microbes in them. However, fruits and vegetables can also be equally harmful!

4. “Food Poisoning Is A Minor Ailment”
Just because it is quite common, it does not mean that it is a minor ailment. If left untreated, food poisoning can lead to organ failure and even death!

5. “Heating Food Will Kill Bacteria”
While this can be true to some extent, if you consume foods that are left open for a long period of time, even heating will fail to kill certain strong microbes.

6. “Food Is Spoilt Only If It Smells Bad”
Contrary to this belief, many a times, microbes grow in the food and do not create a foul odour for a long time, putting you at more risk.

7. “Food Is The Only Cause For Food Poisoning”
Unwashed hands, dirty cooking utensils and unhygienic cooking conditions can also cause food poisoning to a great extent and it is not only caused by consumption of food.
