Asana Of The Day: Sirsasana Or Headstand
Some poses of yoga are so popular that they become representative of yoga in totality. You may have seen many people do the total headstand in office to relieve stress. This yoga asana has in fact been shown in several films and television commercials.
So today, we are talking about Sirsasana or the complete head stand. This is one of the common and also the most beneficial pose in yoga. Yoga has many benefits for the body and mind. And Sirsasana is one of those yoga poses that is helpful equally for both your body and soul. If you dissect the word, you get 'sir' and 'sasana'. 'Sir' in Sanskrit means the head and 'sasana' is the name of the pose.

Steps to do Sirsasana:
- First of all, if you are a beginner you would need help of your guide or slowly lean against a wall while doing this yoga asana. Please follow the safety rules or else, it could result in serious neck injuries.
- Kneel on the ground and place your palms facing downwards. Your knees should be firmly placed on the ground.
- Next, fold your arms under your head like a cushion. Fold your body at the waist and place your toes on the floor. At this time, you resemble the downward facing dog pose.
- Now slowly, shift the base of your balance to your head. Slowly lift your legs off the floor balancing your entire weight on your head.
- Straighten your legs until you achieve the 90 degrees position of the perfect headstand.
- At this point, your entire body weight is balanced on your head.
Benefits Of Sirsasana:
- Believe it or not, this yoga asana helps you digest your food very easily.
- Sirsasana works great to improve the blood circulation of the entire body. In fact, if you are prone to swellings in your leg, this asana helps you in a great way. It does not allow the blood to remain pooled in the legs.
- You breathe deeply when you are standing on your head. This expands your diaphragm and gives you a boost of energy. It also relieves stress.
- It is believed that this asana can increase the flow of sex hormones to your private parts. Thus, it improves your libido.
- This is the best way to correct your posture. You will end up with back that is as straight as a ramrod.
- The main benefit of this yoga pose is that, it increases the flow of blood to the brain. This allows you to think faster and better.
