Pregnancy Nose: What Is It? Here's Why It Happens
Pregnancy nose - you may have seen several videos on Instagram or TikTok, with women pointing out how pregnancy changed their nose shape! Yes, the shape of their nose.
What Is Pregnancy Nose?
Pregnancy nose, also known as rhinitis of pregnancy, is a condition that causes nasal congestion and a stuffy nose during pregnancy. It is characterised by the enlargement of the nose due to increased blood flow to the area [1].

This can cause the nose to appear larger, wider, and redder than normal. This can change the shape of the nose as well as give it a reddish tinge. The condition usually appears during the second trimester and usually resolves itself soon after the baby is born.
What Causes Pregnancy Nose?
Pregnancy nose is thought to be caused by increased blood flow to the nose area, which can be a result of hormonal changes. It is also believed that the additional blood flow can cause excess skin oils and sweat to accumulate, making the skin look redder. For some people, a pregnancy nose can last up to six months after delivery [2].
What Are The Symptoms Of Pregnancy Nose?
Symptoms of pregnancy nose include a stuffy or congested nose, a runny nose, sneezing, and postnasal drip. More severe symptoms can include a bloody nose, nasal congestion that does not respond to decongestants and sinus infections. In some cases, pregnancy nose can cause facial swelling, particularly around the eyes and nose [3].

What Is The Treatment For Pregnancy Nose?
In some cases, a pregnant woman may experience more severe symptoms of pregnancy nose, such as an itchy or burning sensation. In these cases, it may be necessary to consult a doctor to determine the best course of treatment.
Treatment options may include the use of topical creams or steroid nasal sprays [4].
When Does Pregnancy Nose Start?
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to pregnancy, but the symptoms associated with pregnancy nose or pregnancy rhinitis usually appear between twenty and thirty weeks into a pregnancy. By six to eight weeks postpartum, the noses and hands are usually returning to normal.
Will My Nose Go Back To Normal After Pregnancy?
After your pregnancy, your nose will return to normal - but not right away. The swelling typically subsides six weeks after birth, when the postpartum period is ending and your hormones return to normal [5].

On A Final Note...
Overall, pregnancy nose is a relatively common and harmless condition. While it can be uncomfortable for some women, it is usually not a cause for concern and will resolve itself after the baby is born.
