Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2026: History And Significance

Born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was one of the prominent leaders of India's freedom movement. His leadership during the Kheda Satyagraha and Bardoli Satyagraha established him as an influential figure in the struggle against British rule. His role in the Bardoli movement also earned him the title 'Sardar'.

Following India's independence in 1947, Patel became the country's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. One of his most significant contributions was helping integrate hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union. Working alongside civil servant V. P. Menon, he played a central role in the negotiations and administrative efforts that helped bring these territories together.

In recognition of his contribution to national integration, the Government of India introduced Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in 2014. The annual observance promotes national unity, integrity, security and harmony while reminding citizens of the importance of preserving India's diversity.
