Diwali 2026: 5 Healthy Homemade Indian Sweets That Go Beyond Traditional Mithai
Diwali celebrations are often accompanied by boxes of mithai, homemade desserts and sweets shared with family and friends. But if you are looking to make a few mindful changes to your festive menu this year, you can experiment with recipes that use dates, nuts, seeds and fruit for sweetness. While these ingredients do not make every dessert sugar-free, they offer alternatives to recipes that rely heavily on refined sugar.
For Diwali 2026, here are five homemade Indian sweets and festive treats you can prepare with simple ingredients. From rich dates halwa to fruit-sweetened pedas, these recipes bring different flavours and textures to your festive spread.
1. Dates Halwa
Dates provide natural sweetness to this halwa, while ghee, cardamom and roasted nuts give it a rich flavour.
Ingredients:
- 250 g pitted dates
- 3 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp cardamom powder
- ½ tbsp each of cashews, almonds, pistachios and walnuts
Preparation:
- Soak the dates in hot water for 30 minutes and blend them into a smooth paste.
- Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pan and roast the chopped nuts until golden. Set aside.
- Add the remaining ghee to the pan, followed by the date paste.
- Cook on medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously.
- Add the roasted nuts and cardamom powder.
- Continue cooking until the halwa thickens and starts leaving the sides of the pan.
2. Coconut Burfi
This coconut-based dessert combines cashews, cardamom and honey for a soft, rich treat that can be cut into bite-sized squares.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh or desiccated coconut
- 10-15 soaked cashews
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp cardamom powder
- A pinch of salt
Preparation:
- Heat ghee in a pan and lightly roast the coconut.
- Blend the soaked cashews into a smooth paste.
- Add the cashew paste to the coconut and cook until the mixture thickens.
- Stir in honey, cardamom powder and a pinch of salt.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased tray and spread evenly.
- Refrigerate for 30 minutes before cutting into squares.
3. Seed And Amaranth Energy Bars
If you enjoy crunchy treats, these homemade bars combine nuts, seeds and puffed amaranth with dates for sweetness.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup mixed almonds, pistachios and walnuts
- 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds
- 2 tbsp sunflower seeds
- 1 cup puffed amaranth
- 1-2 tbsp ghee
- 1 cup dates
- Chopped pistachios for garnish
Preparation:
- Dry roast the nuts and seeds separately and coarsely grind them.
- Grind the dates into a smooth paste.
- Heat ghee in a pan and mix in the puffed amaranth.
- Add the date paste, ground nuts and seeds.
- Mix until everything comes together.
- Spread the mixture in a greased tray and press firmly.
- Freeze for two hours, cut into bars and garnish with chopped pistachios.
4. No-Added-Sugar Dry Fruit Rolls
These dry fruit rolls use dates as the binding ingredient, while almonds, cashews, pistachios and walnuts add crunch.
Ingredients:
- 500 g deseeded and chopped dates
- ½ cup chopped almonds
- ½ cup chopped cashews
- ½ cup mixed pistachios, raisins and walnuts
- 2 tbsp poppy seeds
- 1 tbsp ghee
- ½ tsp cardamom powder
- Roasted seeds or desiccated coconut for coating
Preparation:
- Heat ghee in a pan and roast the chopped nuts and poppy seeds.
- Remove and keep them aside.
- Add the chopped dates to the same pan and cook until they soften into a paste.
- Mix in the roasted nuts and cardamom powder.
- Stir until the ingredients combine into a thick mixture.
- Shape into a log and coat with roasted seeds or desiccated coconut.
- Allow it to set before slicing into individual rolls.
5. Monk Fruit-Sweetened Fruit Pedas
These homemade pedas use fruit purée for flavour and a non-sugar sweetener for additional sweetness. You can choose mango, banana or apple depending on the flavour you prefer.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup oat flour
- ¼ cup mango protein powder or coconut, oat or almond flour
- ½ cup mashed mango, banana or apple purée
- ⅓ cup Sweetmate or any monk fruit sweetener
- A little cold water, if needed
- Saffron strands for garnish
Preparation:
- Powder the monk fruit sweetener in a blender (if required)
- Combine it with oat flour and your chosen flour.
- Add the fruit purée and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Add a little cold water if the mixture feels too dry.
- Shape into small balls and flatten them into pedas.
- Garnish with saffron strands.
Diwali 2026: Enjoy Your Festive Sweets Mindfully
Making sweets at home allows you to choose your ingredients and adjust the sweetness to your preference. Dates, fruits, nuts and seeds can add flavour and nutrients, but they still contribute calories and, in some cases, natural sugars.
Honey is also a source of free sugars, so these recipes should not all be considered sugar-free. If you are monitoring your blood glucose, pay attention to portion sizes and total carbohydrate intake. This Diwali 2026, you can enjoy homemade festive treats while being more mindful of what goes into each serving.
