Peddi Controversy: Janhvi Kapoor Calls Her Portrayal 'Extreme Objectification'

Janhvi Kapoor did not dodge the question. On Koffee With Karan Season 9, where she appeared alongside Varun Dhawan, she answered head-on how she had processed the Peddi controversy: "That shame I will always carry with me."

It is her first public response to the backlash after the film's June release, and it comes months after the noise first peaked. Her words were measured, personal and, at times, uncomfortably candid.

How The Peddi Controversy Began

Peddi is a sports drama led by Ram Charan, with Janhvi playing Achiyyamma, the love interest of his titular character. Soon after release, viewers questioned how she was presented. Many pointed to sequences that lingered on her body rather than establishing who she was. Another scene drew sharp criticism: Peddi kisses Achiyyamma during a power cut without her consent.

Screenshots of an alleged private chat between Janhvi and fan pages also went viral, reportedly suggesting she was uneasy about certain camera angles. Their authenticity was never confirmed, and she did not address them on the show.

Naming It For What It Was

When host Karan Johar raised the issue, Janhvi did not soften the language. She asked herself: "Was it problematic? Was it extreme objectification?" Her answer was yes.

She said the portrayal weighed on her conscience for the effect such a narrative can have on society, particularly on women. For a lead actor to say that about her own film is rare.

'Should Have Been More Vigilant'

She was equally unsparing about her own role. She admitted she had been hard on herself, and was wary of sounding as though she was shifting blame. In her telling, she had trusted the director's vision and tried to make things less problematic as information reached her.

The working culture mattered too. Scripts, she explained, are rarely bound in South Indian cinema, and camera angles are rarely visible to the cast beforehand. Even so, she said she should have used her privilege to push back, and described the experience as violating in a way.

The one good outcome, she suggested, is that a director may now think twice before presenting a lead actress like this again.

What The Makers Did

Director Buchi Babu Sana had already apologised on X, saying the film never intended to disrespect any female character, and promised changes to the concerned portions.

A Wider Conversation On Saying No

Janhvi's admission lands amid a wider debate. On the same season of the show, Rashmika Mandanna said she draws her own lines on revealing costumes, while Vijay Deverakonda argued that actors need support to refuse scenes without being labelled unprofessional. Rashmika added that even she finds it hard to speak up mid-production.

Bottomline

The Peddi row began as an argument about a film. Janhvi Kapoor's answer turns it into something more useful: a question of who gets to see the script, the shot list and the final cut. Her admission will not undo the damage, but it puts a lead actress on record asking for those conversations to happen before the camera rolls, not after the backlash. For audiences and actors alike, that is a conversation worth having.
