Karwa Chauth Wellness Edit: Yoga Rituals for a Calmer Mind, Better Energy and Inner Balance
Karwa Chauth has always held a special place in Indian family traditions. The excitement begins with preparations at home, choosing traditional clothes, meeting relatives and arranging everything for the evening prayers. For married couples, the festival is also an occasion to spend time with each other and celebrate the years they have shared.

Health deserves attention during these celebrations. A person who is physically active and mentally peaceful can enjoy family occasions with greater comfort. This is where a few familiar Himalayan Yoga practices can be introduced into the day, keeping in mind the physical demands of fasting.
Healing Walk: Enjoying Time Together
Walking is a healthy habit that husband and wife can develop together. A morning walk gives them time away from household responsibilities, work commitments and mobile phones," said Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, Author, Columnist, Founder, Akshar Yoga Kendraa.
In Healing Walk, attention remains on the movement of the feet, the natural rhythm of breathing and the surroundings. A garden, a quiet road or a familiar walking area is suitable for this practice.
Some couples enjoy talking during their walk. Others prefer silence. Both can make the experience enjoyable.
"For Karwa Chauth, a short walk during the cooler hours is preferable. Anyone observing a strict fast should consider their physical condition before beginning," added Akshar.
The same habit can continue after the festival. A regular walking routine is a practical way for couples to remain active and spend time together.
Siddhaa Walk: The Beauty of Infinity
Siddhaa Walk follows a walking pattern resembling the infinity symbol, a horizontal figure eight.
The pattern has two connected loops that meet at the centre. Husband and wife can walk along the curves, approach the central point and continue around the opposite loop.
"In the context of marriage, this arrangement has an interesting significance. Every individual has a personal journey, with different responsibilities, ambitions and experiences. Marriage brings two such journeys together. The meeting point in Siddhaa Walk can be viewed as a reminder of that relationship. The curves continue, just as married life moves through different stages while the partners remain connected," explained Akshar.
Couples can practise the pattern in an open space, maintaining a comfortable walking speed. The activity requires attention to direction and coordination, making it an interesting addition to their regular walking routine.
The infinity pattern also carries a message of continuity in love, companionship and togetherness, qualities that find particular relevance during Karwa Chauth.
Pranayama: Bringing Calmness into the Day
"The way a person breathes often changes with emotions. Anger, worry and excitement can make breathing faster, while a relaxed state generally allows a more comfortable rhythm," said Akshar.
Pranayama introduces discipline into breathing. Couples can begin with a few minutes of natural breathing awareness while sitting comfortably.
The shoulders should remain relaxed, and the breathing should be gentle. There is no need to force inhalation or exhalation.
A short meditation session can follow. Husband and wife may sit together in silence, allowing themselves a little time away from daily concerns.
With regular practice, breathing exercises and meditation can support relaxation, concentration and emotional well-being.
"During Karwa Chauth, those observing a fast should avoid demanding breathing exercises, prolonged breath retention and strenuous physical activity. Weakness or dizziness should never be ignored, particularly during a fast without water," advised Akshar.
Visiting Sacred Places: Remembering Divine Companionship
The relationship between husband and wife has been honoured through many traditions in India. Karwa Chauth is closely connected with prayers for marital happiness, family welfare and the long life of one's spouse.
Indian temples preserve several beautiful representations of divine companionship.
Shiva and Parvati represent an important ideal of marital devotion in Hindu tradition. Lakshmi and Vishnu are worshipped together in many households, while the stories of Krishna and Rukmini have their own place in India's spiritual literature.
A visit to a nearby temple during Karwa Chauth allows couples to participate in these traditions. They may offer flowers, attend the aarti or spend time in prayer.
Such occasions also encourage reflection on the responsibilities that come with marriage. Affection is important, but so are patience, trust, respect and the willingness to care for each other during difficult times.
Couples observing a strict fast should plan temple visits according to their comfort and avoid unnecessary travel or exposure to excessive heat.
Health and Happiness in Married Life
A marriage develops through years of shared responsibilities, family experiences and personal adjustments. During this journey, the health of both partners deserves equal importance.
A disciplined life, a balanced diet, adequate sleep and regular Yoga practice can help promote good health.
"You can help spur your partner to take up these practices. If one person takes care of his health, the other person can encourage him. When work becomes stressful, spending time together can help restore a sense of balance," advised Akshar.
Karwa Chauth is a suitable occasion to reflect on these everyday responsibilities.
The festival's traditional prayers and celebrations can be accompanied by a comfortable walk, gentle breathing practices and meaningful time with family.
People who fast should be careful about their health, particularly those who have medical conditions and take regular medicines.
"The affection expressed during Karwa Chauth deserves to continue through the year. Caring for each other's health, valuing individual needs, and enjoying normal hours of the day is among the attributes of marriage which will endure," concluded Akshar.
