Durga Puja Delicacies To Try In Kolkata
It is that time of the year when foodies flock together by the stalls and line up before the restaurants to try Bengali dishes during Durga Puja. Being carnival of lights sounds and worship, the festival draws attention of people from all over the world. Kolkata is the global centre point of this festival in terms of antiquity, investment, frolic, popularity and nostalgia. After the receding summer heat waves and unusual monsoon, Autumn has finally ushered with the smell of Durga Puja in the city of Kolkata. With this comes a craving, a hunger for conventional Bengali dishes. We will tell you about some unique recipes that you can try out only in Kolkata during the four to six days Pujas.
Best Place To Have Thai Dishes in Bangalore
Dhanepatar Bada:
Puja without some adda sessions (chitchats) in the heritage Puja houses is boring and without snacks, it loses all its flavour. Try out these fritters also known as Dhanepatar Bada prepared with coriander leaves and flavoured with choice of spice. Along with tea, ‘tis a very enticing snack.
Masoor Daler Bada:
Ever heard of Lentil fritters? This will just get you in the mood for snacks and tea while you listen to the Dhak (puja drums) from the nearby pandals (marquees/ places of worship) decked up in pomp and arty grandeur of the Pujas. The snack goes well with tomato chutney or tomato sauce along with tea or coffee.
Best Places In Kolkata To Have Bengali Food During Durga Puja
Shorshe Mach: The exclusivity of this dish is its preparation in mustard gravy that adds to the flavour of the finely cooked fresh water fish like rohu, Ilish or katla. Many Bengalis drool at the mention of this dish name.
Muri Ghonto: If you never had Fish Pulao cooked with fish head then Muri Ghonto is the perfect recipe for you. A lunch with Muri Ghonto as the side dish with steamed rice and dal is an awesome recipe for the foodie looking for a unique and conventional Durga Puja fish delicacy.
Daab Chingri:
This is prawns prepared with mustard and stuffed inside a coconut. Experience the added flavour of coconut cream as you scoop out the mustard prawns.
Bandhakopir Dalna:This is cabbage curry prepared during Durga Pujas with cabbage as the main ingredient of the dish. Bandhakopir Dalna is a very popular side dish.
Patishapta:
A popular sweet dish, this is a stuffing made with coconut and dry fruits and covered with a layer of delicate flour. Although very much in trend during winters, this is a very delicious recipe that is savoured during the Durga Pujas as well.
Although these dishes are Durga Puja and Kolkata specific, take note that some heritage houses (in case you have been invited to a heritage house Puja) will not be serving non veg food on certain days as per rites and rituals that the worshippers follow. Nevertheless all the dishes, without a doubt, are worth an experience.
