Holi: Holi Precaution Tips For Asthmatic People
When you have asthma, your airways narrow and swell and possibly produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and cause coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
And Holi can be especially triggering for people with asthma!
While everyone enjoys getting smeared with colours, asthmatics may face potential danger on this day.
Holi Tips For Asthmatic People
Holi, from the bonfire to the dry colours and dust, can wreak havoc on the health of those with asthma.
For your safety, here are some precautions you should take during Holi celebrations to avoid asthma attacks.
Tip 1: During Holi, choose natural colours rather than artificial ones. Although they can also trigger asthma attacks, the harm will be minimal as compared to toxic colours. Artificial colours contain chemicals that can be harmful and can even cause skin irritations or breathing difficulties. Natural colours, on the other hand, are made from plant materials that are safe and non-toxic, but still, wear a mask [1].
Tip 2: In order to prevent breathing problems, do not play with dry colours. Dry colours release particles that remain suspended in the air for a long period of time. These particles can enter the lungs and cause problems with breathing in asthmatic people [2].
These particles can also cause irritation in the eyes, nose and throat, and can cause an allergic reaction in asthmatic people. Moreover, long-term exposure to these particles can lead to serious health issues such as lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory problems.
Tip 3: Wear a scarf or mask to prevent inhalation of smoke pollutants that can trigger asthma attacks. Avoid going too close to the bonfire while it is being lit.
Smoke pollutants can contain microscopic particles that can irritate the lungs and cause asthma attacks. Wearing a scarf or mask helps to filter out some of these particles, and avoiding going too close to the bonfire prevents you from inhaling the smoke directly [3].
Tip 4: If you suffer from asthma, you should always keep your inhaler in your possession. Avoid air pollution, smoke, fragrances, and allergens that trigger asthma. Having an inhaler with you is the least you can do if you cannot avoid playing Holi. You will be able to use this precaution if you feel uneasy or breathless [4].
Tip 5: Additionally, you should take your long-term asthma medications on time as they are prescribed by your doctor in order to prevent symptoms and attacks. These medications should be taken every day, regardless of whether you are experiencing any symptoms.
On A Final Note...
If you feel uneasy and cannot control your breathing, you should contact your physician immediately.
