Holi: Beware Of These Side Effects Of Holi Colours

Obviously, Holi is incomplete without colours.

But did you know that the colours we use to celebrate Holi contain a variety of toxic chemicals such as mercury, asbestos, silica, mica, and lead, which can be harmful to the skin, and eyes, and even cause respiratory problems?

Side Effects Of Holi Colours

There are now organic holi colours available, but synthetic holi colours remain prevalent, mainly due to their affordability [1]. However, by trying to save money, you are jeopardizing your overall well-being.

See what the side effects of Holi colours are.

Side Effects Of Holi Colours

Chemicals, toxic metal-based pigments, mica, glass granules, and asbestos are some of the substances used in making holi colours - and I am sure you know how these substances can harm our health.

1. Respiratory issues

Colours that are dry fall very slowly when thrown in the air, signifying the presence of heavy metals and contaminants in high concentrations of particles under 10 microns [2].

The contaminants in colours can enter the mouth and airways and cause respiratory problems. These particles are too small to be filtered out by the body's natural defence mechanisms, so they can be inhaled into the lungs [3]. Once in the lungs, they can remain there and cause inflammation and other health issues.

2. Aggravates asthma, COPD etc.

Due to the presence of particulate chemicals in the colours, individuals with compromised immunity or asthma should avoid playing Holi [4]. Asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory conditions can be aggravated by these chemicals, resulting in wheezing, coughing, and mucus production.

3. Causes allergies

Synthetic colours can also irritate our nasal cavities, trigger rhinitis or allergic colds, and may cause hypersensitivity to the airways. This is because synthetic colours can contain small particles that can be inhaled, leading to irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose and airways [5].

In some cases, these particles may also trigger an immune response from the body, leading to an allergic reaction.

4. Causes ear infection

It is not recommended to play Holi with water-guns or water balloons because water may enter the ear and cause itching, earaches, or blockages. The impact of water balloons upon hitting the ear can cause a perforated tympanic membrane or a ruptured eardrum [6].

In severe cases, a ruptured eardrum may result in hearing loss and may require surgical repair. These symptoms are associated with pain in the ears, discharge from the ears, and ringing in the ears.

5. Causes skin allergies

In one study, it was found that Holi colours can cause severe skin allergies, with itching being the most common symptom, followed by burning, pain, oozing, and scaling of the skin [7].

On A Final Note...

Using synthetic holi colours may seem like an easy alternative, but opt for eco-friendly colours made of flower petals, herbs, vegetable extract, and turmeric to avoid respiratory issues, skin allergies, and ENT issues.

Have a safe and fun Holi everyone!
