Vegetarians And Meat Craving During Pregnancy: Is It A Sign Of Nutritional Deficiency?
During pregnancy, food cravings are as common as morning sickness and fatigue. Most commonly, they occur during the first trimester. The most popular food on the list of pregnancy cravings is junk food, particularly pickles, a food that is generally not as nutritious as it could be.

Some pregnancy food cravings can be extremely strange, including peanut butter and pickles, milk, chips, and even chalk. In the same vein, you may begin to dislike your favourite food while pregnant [1].
Occasionally, hard-core vegetarians may crave meat. Experts have also mentioned that vegetarians and vegans often crave meat during pregnancy and after childbirth.
Vegetarians And Meat Cravings During Pregnancy
Vegetarians and meat cravings during pregnancy may be a controversial topic but it is important to be looked into.
The cravings you experience during pregnancy are no joke, but it is important to know that this is completely normal. This does not indicate that you are a bad person, a terrible vegan, or that you must consume meat while pregnant [2][3].
The body may exhibit cravings for specific nutrients if it is deficient in certain nutrients. Meat cravings during pregnancy and after childbirth are often a result of iron deficiency. A person's body may also try to replenish iron and protein lost during childbirth after delivery.
Due to the monthly blood loss associated with menstruation, most women of reproductive age have low iron stores at the beginning of their reproductive lives. Women need more iron when pregnant to support the growing foetus. Due to the bleeding associated with childbirth, women may become even more deficient in this area after giving birth [4].

There is also evidence that meat cravings during pregnancy may be related to the body's requirement for vitamin B12, which supports the nervous system of both mother and child.
Red meat, milk, and salmon are frequently fortified with vitamin B12, although some cereals and soy products are also fortified with the vitamin [5].
A well-rounded diet is essential during pregnancy since good nutrition supports fetal development. Eating a vegan or vegetarian diet throughout pregnancy is not necessarily harmful to either mother or child.
It can, however, make it more difficult to obtain adequate amounts of protein and nutrients, such as iron and vitamin B12. In order to help the body absorb iron, vegetarians, and vegans should also consume foods rich in vitamin C, which aids in the absorption of iron found in animal products [6].
Is Meat Cravings A Sign Of Nutritional Deficiency?
The nutritional needs and preferences of each individual may differ. For example, meat cravings may indicate that a person needs more iron or B12, but this does not necessarily mean that meat is the best source of these nutrients. In addition, beans, lentils, and soybeans are also good sources of iron [7][8].
Consequently, pregnant women should have frequent and open conversations about diet and nutrition with their doctor or nutritionist during pregnancy and after delivery.

Despite the fact that your cravings may be irrational, it does not indicate that you are personally irrational. The best way to deal with this kind of input is to feel confident about it. If you eat a healthy and balanced diet, there is no need to listen to anyone who tells you to eat steak.
It is also fine if you want to ease your intense pregnancy cravings while remaining vegan or vegetarian.
