If your mouth is not producing saliva, it could be due to a health issue. Read on to know what it is.
Saliva has a role. Yes, your body uses saliva to digest food. Apart from that, saliva also keeps your mouth clean and also maintains some moisture in your mouth.
You won't believe this but saliva also helps in keeping fungi and bacteria in control. All this boils down to one point.

If your mouth fails to produce enough of saliva, it tends to become dry and bacteria also tend to dominate your mouth! Dry mouth is a condition which has a name xerostomia. Here are more facts on this.

Why is your mouth dry? Well, certain conditions like diabetes, mumps, stroke, hypertension, arthritis, anemia and even Alzheimer's could cause dry mouth.

Certain medications also affect saliva production. Tablets used to treat asthma, nausea, diarrhea, hypertension, epilepsy, acne, obesity, cold, allergy, anxiety, pain and depression could cause dry mouth.

Even radiation and chemotherapy could interfere with saliva production. Medical treatments which affect the salivary glands could cause dry mouth.

In cases of nerve damage whether it is due to an accident or a surgery dry mouth could occur.

When you don't drink enough water or when you are dehydrated due to any other reason, your mouth tends to become dry. Vomiting, hyperhidrosis, fever or even blood loss could make your mouth dry.

If you smoke excessively, dry mouth is one common side effect. If you have the habit of opening your mouth to breathe, that could also make it dry.

What happens when your mouth goes dry? Well, you tend to feel thirsty or even experience cracked lips or sores inside it. Even bad breath could occur if your saliva levels are too low. Consult a doctor to get the issues diagnosed.
