Pregnancy Skin Changes: What’s Normal and What Needs a Dermatologist?

Pregnancy brings a lot of changes to the body, and the skin is usually one of the first places these changes show up. Some skin problems that occur during pregnancy are completely normal and will go away after the baby is born. It helps for pregnant women to know which skin problems can be managed with a simple skincare routine and which ones need to be checked by a dermatologist.

We spoke to Dr Noopur Jain, Founder and Consultant Dermatologist, Skinzest, who breaks down which pregnancy skin changes are harmless and hormone-driven, and which ones signal something a doctor should look at.

Hyperpigmentation and Linea Nigra

Many women notice their skin getting darker in certain areas during pregnancy. This is called hyperpigmentation, and it commonly affects the nipples, the area around the nipples, the underarms, and the inner thighs. Some women also develop a dark line running down their belly, known as linea nigra. These changes are not usually a cause for concern and will probably fade after the baby is born.

Melasma, or the "Mask of Pregnancy"

Melasma, also known as the "mask of pregnancy," causes brown or grey patches to appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. "If you are pregnant, it is very important to protect your skin from the sun, as sun exposure can make these patches worse. Use a sunscreen that is safe for pregnancy, and wear a hat or stay in the shade when you are outside," advised Dr Jain.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are also very common during pregnancy. They form when the skin stretches significantly, a process that hormonal changes can worsen. There is no way to completely prevent stretch marks, but keeping the skin moisturised and avoiding rapid weight gain can help. It is also worth remembering that stretch marks are not the result of anything you did or did not do; they are simply something that happens to a lot of women during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Acne and Skincare Products

Hormonal changes can also trigger acne and make the skin more oily or sensitive. Some women who had clear skin before pregnancy may start getting breakouts, while others may simply notice their skin feels different overall. "It is important to be careful about which skincare products you use during pregnancy, as some products used to treat acne and skin discolouration are not safe at this time. Talk to a dermatologist before starting any new products," added Dr Jain.

When to See a Doctor

Not all skin problems that happen during pregnancy are normal, though. You should see a doctor if you have:

  • Itching that will not go away on the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet
  • A rash that spreads quickly
  • New skin lesions
  • A pre-existing skin condition that gets a lot worse

If you have itching without a rash, do not ignore it, it could be a sign of a pregnancy-related problem that needs to be checked by a doctor.

What The Expert Suggests

"My advice to women is to keep their skincare routine simple. Washing your face gently using a moisturiser and protecting your skin from the sun are usually enough to keep your skin healthy. Do not try to treat your skin problems on your own or get procedures without talking to a dermatologist first," said Dr Jain.

Bottomline

Pregnancy can cause a lot of changes in the skin, and most of these changes are normal. If you understand what is happening to your skin and know when you need to see a doctor, you will feel more confident and comfortable during your pregnancy. It is a time of a lot of changes, and it is normal for your skin to change too. With a little care and attention, you can keep your skin healthy and happy during pregnancy.
