8 Heart Healthy Fruits and Why You Should Have Them
Heart healthy fruits you should eat
An interesting irony has occurred this year.
The World Heart Day (29th September) is on the 9th day of Durga Puja here in India. And while the former is all about spreading awareness about heart diseases and ways to keep your heart healthy, the latter gives its believers the freedom to eat and drink to their heart's content for 10 days.
And being a Bengali, I know first hand what that means - eating oily fish fries, relishing mutton curries and biryanis, and sampling all the awesome (albeit unhealthy) food items sold in stalls in every Durga puja pandal.
So if you have been stuffing yourself to the gills with foods that taste divine, even if they would never pass your doctor's radar, then continue reading. Because in this article I am going to reveal the 8 fruits you should eat on a regular basis to keep your heart healthy and disease-free.
#1 Apples
FACT: An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
Why? Because it is packed with flavonoids and fibers.
And we are concerned about the former in this case because flavonoids have the ability to reduce platelet adhesion to your blood vessel walls, which prevents cholesterol plaque formation.

#2 Bananas
Why is the banana a man's favorite fruit?
It's because you don't need to wash it, cut it, or grab a bowl (or plate) before eating it. (What did you think?)
But that's not the only reason why you should have a banana.
You should have it because it is rich in potassium and magnesium. Both of which are known to reduce blood pressure (which in turn prevents blood turbulence and the resulting damage to vessel walls and organs).
#3 Muskmelon
Muskmelons (a.k.a cantaloupe) are rich in vitamin A, B6, B12 and C. Plus, they are a great source of potassium and fibers.
#4 Berries
The kind does not matter. All berries are great! (Although blackberries happen to have the most health benefits).
This is because not only do they taste great, they are also rich in vitamins and minerals that keep you healthy and disease-free.
#5 Oranges
Oranges are a treat to have during winters (and are on their way to us this year once again). But they are also great for your heart as they are rich in vitamin C and fibers.
#6 Papaya
If you ask people what their favorite fruit is, you will never hear that it is the papaya (or you might hear it very rarely). But this fruit is great for maintaining your overall health as it is rich in vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
#7 Apricot
This fruit was considered "golden eggs of the Sun" by the ancient Greeks. And is a famous addition in many Mediterranean dishes.
And though it might be a bit on the expensive side in India, it is definitely one of those fruits you should add to your list to be consumed every once in a while.
#8 Kiwi
They taste delicious and are known to give you a case of the itchy tongue when you eat too much of them. But they are excellent antioxidants and should definitely be on your list as heart healthy fruits to eat.
