Pav Bhaji: Easy Street Food Recipe

Pav Bhaji is a recipe that comes from the street corners of India. Although it is basically a Maharashtrian dish, the recipe for pav bhaji is popular across the length and breath of India. It is actually quite an easy Indian recipe to prepare. Pav bhaji recipe has all the zing and flamboyance of typical spicy Indian food. While preparing this street food recipe be a little generous with both spices and butter. You cannot experience the richness and fun of a great pav bhaji recipe if you are constantly conscious of the calories you are consuming.

Ingredients For Pav Bhaji:

1. Pav or bun breads-8 (slices half open from the middle)
2. Potatoes-2 (boiled)
3. Peas-1 cup (boiled)
4. Carrots-2 (boiled)
5. Cauliflower-10 florets (boiled)
6. Cabbage-half (boiled)
7. String beans-10 (boiled)
8. Onions-2 (chopped finely)
9. Tomatoes-2 (pulp)
10. Ginger garlic paste-1 tablespoon
11. Capsicum-1 (chopped)
12. Green chillies-4 (minced)
13. Coriander leaves (chopped)
14. Red Chilli powder-1 tablespoon
15. Cumin powder-1 tablespoon
16. Coriander powder-1 tablespoon
17. Pav Bhaji masal powder-1 tablespoon
18. Garam masala powder-1 teaspoon (contains pepper, cloves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom and start anise)
19. Butter-2 tablespoons
20. Oil-2 tablespoons
21. Salt as per taste

Procedure For Making Pav Bhaji:

  • Boil all the vegetables except capsicum in water with salt for 5 minutes. The vegetables should be chopped before boiling so that they cook better and are easier to mash.
  • Meanwhile heat oil in a deep pan and saute onions in it until they start smelling good and turn golden. Add the ginger garlic paste now and stir to mix it well.
  • The vegetables must be cooked by now so strain the water and mash them with a serving spoon.
  • Add chopped capsicum and green chillies to the pan after 2 minutes and mix well. After a minute add tomato pulp and all the powdered spices except garam masala which will be added in the end.
  • Cook the spices for 2 minutes and then add the mashed vegetables. Stir well for a few minutes and add half a cup water with salt.
  • Let it cook for 5 minutes and then add garam masala powder and garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Your bhaji is ready.
  • For the pav all you need to do is melt some butter on a shallow pan and let the pav soak it up.

Serve hot pavs with bhaji for a great evening snacks.
