Men's skirt is not a novel feature in the world of men's attire. In fact men's skirts dates back in the history of men's clothing even earlier to trousers. Men were accustomed to wearing clothes that were not bifurcated like robes, togas, tunics and sarongs etc that provided more comfort and freedom from the confining or crutching trousers. In fact the stories of the Bible portray men wearing skirts.

Skirts are still worn in other parts like Africa, the Middle East, parts of Asia and the pacific islands. Caftans, Djellabahs, Sarongs, Lavas-lavas are the names of the skirt like garments worn in these parts. Greeks and Albanians even to this day wear Fustanella and in Bhutan men wear Gho, which are also not bifurcated.

Skirt wearers claim that the skirts are much more comfortable, airy, roomy and also not confining like the trousers. They are of the view that skirts suit men's anatomy when compared to trousers. When one thinks of skirts for men it is the Scottish kilts that first pops up in front of the mind's eye. It is still quite a scene in Scotland with men in their native kilts. Being the most famous and the accepted form of skirts, the kilts are made of tarn wool with knee sox and a pouch in the front called the sporran. They portray the bravery and independent masculinity in men.

Men skirts find expression in a variety of styles featuring solid colours, lighter weights and textured with other fabrics. They retain the old model as the base but appear with novel innovations that suit the modern times. Modern clothes for men that are not bifurcated are found in today's market as well. Men in Germany have Mannerocks and men in the US wear Utilikilts. These combine the comfort and cater the masculine aspect in the appearance of the kilts and also provide the comfort of cargo pants. These are specially created in accordance with the modern aspects of clothing.

Mel Gibson in 'The Brave heart' and Liam Neeson in 'Rob Roy' appear in kilts and are good examples for anyone who is skeptical or doubtful about the masculinity of the men wearing kilts. In modern days we have bands of men like' The Brave Hearts' who have established their liking for wearing skirts. These people state that they are driven to form such bands or groups with their sole interest in wearing skirts. They have made it clear that they are neither cross dressers nor homosexuals and have no sexual orientation.

With trousers having become a unisex garment, the 21st century can be the beginning of an attire renaissance with regards to men's clothing starting with skirts.
