World Menopause Day 2026: Theme, Significance And What Research Reveals About Menopause In India
World Menopause Day 2026 is observed on October 18 to raise awareness about menopause and the health concerns women may experience during this stage of life. The 2026 theme, "Chronic Pain At Midlife," highlights the need to recognise persistent pain, improve research and ensure women receive appropriate, evidence-based care. The observance was established by the International Menopause Society (IMS) in 2009 to improve understanding, education and support around menopause.
What Is The Significance Of The 2026 Theme?
Chronic pain can affect women during and after the menopause transition, yet it may be overlooked or dismissed as a normal part of ageing. Joint pain, muscle aches, headaches and widespread discomfort can interfere with sleep, mobility and everyday activities. Although hormonal changes may contribute to some symptoms, not all pain is caused by menopause. The IMS campaign calls for better recognition, further research and individualised approaches to care.
Understanding Menopause And Its Symptoms
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), natural menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. It is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without menstruation, when no other cause explains the absence of periods. Perimenopause, the transition leading up to menopause, can last several years.
Common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, vaginal dryness and joint or muscle discomfort. Symptoms vary considerably, and some women experience few or none. Declining oestrogen levels can also contribute to bone loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
What Do Indian Studies Reveal?
A 2025 study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of India analysed data from 25,256 women using the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India. It reported premature menopause before age 40 in 7.4% of participants, early menopause between ages 40 and 44 in 17.5%, and delayed menopause after age 55 in 13.4%.
The analysis used survey data collected between 2017 and 2019, so these figures should not be interpreted as current prevalence estimates.
A separate 2024 study of 148 women in rural Puducherry found that 96.6% reported menopausal symptoms, with backache reported by 62.3%. Its small, localised sample means the findings cannot be generalised to all women in India, but they highlight the importance of symptom awareness and access to care.
Managing Menopause And Protecting Health
Menopause is a natural life stage, not an illness. Depending on individual symptoms and medical history, hormone therapy, non-hormonal treatments and lifestyle measures may help manage symptoms. Regular physical activity, attention to bone health and medical assessment of persistent pain are also important.
World Menopause Day 2026 highlights why women's experiences should not be dismissed or automatically attributed to ageing. Better awareness, timely medical evaluation and evidence-based care can help women make informed decisions about their health during midlife and beyond.
