Thirukkural-On Avoiding Vulgarity-Kural-458

Thirukkural 458, Good associations
Mananalam nankudaiya raayinum saanrorkku
Inanalam aemap pudaithu

Even wise and virtuous gentlemen of pure mind
Need good associations for effective strength.

In this Kural, Thiruvalluvar speaks of the complementary need, for even 'Sanron" – wise and virtuous gentleman, not necessarily the king or the prince alone, but also other learned and righteous persons of 'Mananalam' (goodness of mind) along with 'Inanalam' (goodness of association too)

It is true that purity of heart gives a king or any other person a remarkable and patently identifiable inner ability and fortitude. But the outer strength that the World recognizes will be provided only by good friends, advisers in the court and allies outside.
