Tirukkural-On Virtue-On Self Restraint-Kural 125

By Staff

Thirukkural In English, Kural 125
Ellaarkkum nanraam panithal avarullum
celvarkke celvan takaithu

Rajaji would translate this as:

It is well for every one to be meek, but for those Who have wealth, meekness is an added possession.

While it is good for all to be meek, it becomes a special ornament for the rich. In fact, when a rich man does not possess it, the resultant offensiveness can be unbearable. Humility of deportment does not detract from learning and wealth; on the contrary it enhances their worth. For as Saadi has stated, 'The beloved of the Almighty are the rich, who have the humility of the poor".
