WHY IS SINDOOR SIGNIFICANT IN HINDUISM?
Red in India, is considered holy and is symbolic of a certain time, place and action in one's personal life. While its implications may differ across religious sects in India, the overall implication of the colour are universal.

The Sindoor
According to popular beliefs, sindoor or vermillion is the symbol of Goddess Parvati or Sati. According to Hindu astrology, the house of Aries is on the forehead. The lord of Aries is Mars. Since the colour of Mars is red, it is believed to be auspicious. It is the sign of soubhagya or good fortune. Hence, the colour red brings in good fortune.

The Tilak
The tilak is put in the place where the third eye of Lord Shiva, the destroyer, is said to be. The significance is that by putting the tilak one gains the all pervading powers to protect the inner wisdom.

The Colour Of Sensuality
The red colour creates a positive energy which instigates the libido. It stirs the sensuality in humans and therefore, a bride is supposed to wear everything in red during marriage.

Red Increases Hunger
Red colour is also said to increase hunger. That is why restaurants are usually decorated in red.

The red colour brings out these traits: adventure, love, determination, flexibility, power, sensibility, sensuality, excitement, self-confidence, ambition and concentration.
