Guru Pradosh Vrat 2026: Know The Puja Timings, Fasting Rules And Shiva Worship Rituals
Pradosh Vrat is observed on Trayodashi Tithi to worship Lord Shiva during the evening hours. In October 2026, the observance falls on a Thursday, giving it the name Guru Pradosh Vrat. This time, the day also coincides with Masik Shivratri, making October 8 significant for devotees who follow Shiva-related observances.
Pradosh Vrat 2026 Date And Tithi
Guru Pradosh Vrat 2026 will be observed on Thursday, October 8th. It falls during Krishna Paksha Trayodashi in the Hindu month of Ashwin. According to Panchang calculations, Trayodashi begins around 11:16 PM on October 7 and ends around 10:15 PM on October 8. Since the Trayodashi Tithi falls on Thursday, the observance is known as Guru Pradosh.
Pradosh Kaal And Puja Timings
Pradosh Vrat is closely associated with the evening period around sunset, known as Pradosh Kaal. The exact timing depends on the location because sunset varies across cities. For example, the Pradosh period in different Indian locations can begin shortly after 6 PM and continue until around 8:30 PM.
Devotees should therefore check the local Panchang for the precise Pradosh Kaal before planning the puja. Shiva worship during this period is considered an important part of the observance.
Guru Pradosh Vrat Puja Vidhi
Devotees generally begin the day with a bath and take a sankalp to observe the fast. During the evening puja, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped. Those performing Shiva Lingam puja may offer water, milk, curd, ghee, Panchamrit, belpatra, flowers and sandalwood.
Chanting "Om Namah Shivaya", performing aarti and reading or listening to the Pradosh Vrat Katha are also traditional practices. The exact rituals can vary according to family and regional customs.
What To Eat During Pradosh Vrat?
Fasting practices differ among devotees. Some observe a strict fast, while others consume fruits, milk, curd, nuts or foods traditionally permitted during vrat. Sabudana and preparations made with fasting grains such as singhara or rajgira may also be consumed according to individual tradition.
There is no single fasting diet that applies to everyone, so devotees generally follow their family or religious practice.
Significance Of Guru Pradosh Vrat 2026
Pradosh Vrat 2026 is traditionally believed to be an auspicious time to seek Lord Shiva's blessings for peace, wellbeing and the removal of obstacles. Guru Pradosh, because it falls on Thursday, carries additional significance in traditions associated with the day.
October 8 is also observed as Masik Shivratri, as Krishna Chaturdashi begins later that night after Trayodashi ends. This makes the date particularly significant for Shiva devotees.
The observance ultimately centres on devotion, fasting and evening worship of Lord Shiva. Since Panchang timings vary by location, checking the local sunset and Pradosh Kaal can help devotees perform the rituals at the appropriate time.
