What Is Part Of The Air Force Day 2026 Celebrations?

The day's programme centres on the ceremonial Air Force Day parade at Hindon, bringing together Air Warriors and senior IAF leadership. The event features ceremonial drill, marching contingents and an aerial display highlighting the force's aircraft and operational capabilities.

The celebrations also showcase the IAF's heritage alongside its modern combat strength. Aircraft and other defence platforms are being highlighted as part of the events, reflecting how the force has evolved from its early years into a technologically advanced fighting force.

The occasion also recognises the contribution and service of IAF personnel through honours and awards.

Why Is Air Force Day Celebrated On October 8?

The Indian Air Force was officially established on October 8, 1932, during the British era. Its first operational squadron was formed in 1933. After Independence, the IAF became a key component of India's defence structure and went on to participate in major conflicts, including the 1947-48 Jammu and Kashmir operations, the 1965 and 1971 wars and the 1999 Kargil conflict.

During the Kargil War, the IAF carried out Operation Safed Sagar, providing air support in challenging high-altitude conditions.

IAF's Role And Operational Focus In 2026

This year's celebrations come after a series of major exercises and operational initiatives. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, in his Air Force Day message, highlighted Exercise Vayushakti, bilateral exercises, Dronathon and the ongoing multilateral Exercise Tarang Shakti as important efforts to test combat readiness and bring emerging technologies into operational planning.

He also referred to Operation Sindoor, saying it demonstrated the importance of integrated air operations and the IAF's ability to defend India's sovereignty. At the same time, the force continues to assist during humanitarian crises and other emergencies.

Looking Back At 94 Years Of The IAF

From its beginnings in 1932, the Indian Air Force has expanded into a force responsible for air defence, surveillance, strategic airlift, combat operations and humanitarian assistance. Its fleet and capabilities have also continued to evolve with greater emphasis on indigenous technology and modern warfare.

As the IAF marks its 94th anniversary, Air Force Day 2026 offers a look at both its long military history and the changing demands placed on India's air power. The celebrations at Hindon bring these two aspects together through a combination of ceremonial traditions and displays of the force's present-day capabilities.
