Nana Patekar’s Sudden Cardiac Arrest: Cardiologist Explains What Warning Signs People Often Miss

The news of Bollywood actor Nana Patekar reportedly suffering a sudden cardiac event is a reminder that heart problems do not always announce themselves with dramatic chest pain. In many people, particularly older adults, warning signs can be subtle, intermittent and easily mistaken for everyday problems. According to Dr. M. Sai Sudhakar, Interventional Cardiologist, Gleneagles Hospital, Fortis Network, Lakdikapool, Hyderabad, recognising these symptoms early can help identify an underlying heart problem before it becomes more serious.

Breathlessness Should Never Be Casually Dismissed

"Cardiac arrest can occur suddenly, but in many individuals there may have been warning symptoms beforehand. Recognising these symptoms and seeking medical attention early can sometimes prevent a catastrophic event," Dr. M. Sai Sudhakar explains.

According to the cardiologist, unexplained breathlessness, especially when it occurs during activities that were previously comfortable, may indicate underlying coronary artery disease or heart failure. Breathlessness at rest, while lying down, or waking up suddenly at night is particularly concerning.

Unusual Fatigue Can Be A Cardiac Symptom

Extreme or unexplained tiredness is often attributed to age, poor sleep or a busy lifestyle. However, new fatigue, especially when accompanied by reduced exercise tolerance, can occasionally be a sign of inadequate blood supply to the heart.

This is why a noticeable change in energy levels or the ability to carry out routine activities should not always be dismissed as normal ageing.

Dizziness, Fainting Or Sudden Weakness

Feeling light-headed, nearly fainting or actually losing consciousness can sometimes indicate an abnormal heart rhythm or reduced blood flow to the brain.

These symptoms warrant prompt medical evaluation, particularly in older adults or people with known heart disease.

Palpitations Deserve Attention

A racing, pounding or irregular heartbeat may be harmless in some situations, but persistent or recurrent palpitations, especially when associated with dizziness, chest discomfort or breathlessness, should not be ignored.

Dr. Sudhakar stresses the importance of paying attention when these symptoms are new, recurring or accompanied by other signs that could point towards a cardiovascular problem.

Chest Discomfort Is Not Always "Pain"

Heart-related discomfort may feel like pressure, heaviness, tightness, burning or indigestion. It can also radiate to the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw.

Importantly, some people-especially older adults and those with diabetes-may experience little or no classic chest pain. This can make it easier to overlook a potentially serious cardiac problem.

The Message Is Simple: Listen To Your Heart

Sudden cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack, although a heart attack can trigger cardiac arrest. The best protection is recognising cardiovascular risk factors and acting early.

If new or unexplained breathlessness, chest discomfort, fainting, palpitations or unusual fatigue occurs, do not simply wait for it to pass. Seek medical assessment.

A timely ECG, blood tests, echocardiogram and, when indicated, coronary evaluation can identify potentially serious cardiac problems.

For Dr. Sudhakar, the key message is not to underestimate symptoms simply because they appear mild or resemble everyday problems. When it comes to the heart, a symptom that feels "small" should never be allowed to become a life-threatening event.
