The couple has to put on huge amounts of physical and mental effort to achieve some sense of normality after the stroke. The medication process and the fear of another stroke lead to reduction or total loss of sexual desire. Most of the females also lost interest in their appearance, regardless of their age.
On the other side, a stroke can lead to consistent irritability, anger, agitation and intolerance. The patients will develop these negative feelings due to their inability to perform routine daily activities. They are being discouraged from doing things they could do before their stroke, which made the survivors feel demoralized, and affected their confidence.
The survivors of the stroke also may feel reluctant to resume social activities. The stroke can also raise many physical, psychological, social and emotional issues in a relationship. It is important to point out that stroke can happen at any age and many of the survivors who took part in our study were relatively young.
Hilary Thompson, who is based at Mullinure Hospital, Armagh carried out the research with Dr Assumpta Ryan from the School of Nursing and Institute of Nursing Research at the University of Ulster.
