Varan Bhaat Recipe: How To Make Maharashtrian Varan Bhaat
Varan bhaat is an authentic Maharashtrian dish that is prepared as an accompaniment with rice during Ganesh Chathurthi. Here is a detailed preparation method with images and a video.
Varan bhaat is a Maharashtrian delicacy that is mainly prepared during Ganesh Chathurthi. It is a plain dal that is prepared with toor dal and a few basic spices added to it as a flavouring.
Varan bhaat is a favourite amongst the young and the old. The dal bhaat is usually partaken with rice during upwas and hence very limited amount of spice is added, to cleanse the system.
Maharashtrian varan bhaat is a quick and simple recipe to make and the people of that region consider it as a comfort food. The varan bhaat is also served to Lord Ganesha as naivedyum.

VARAN BHAAT VIDEO RECIPE

Recipe Type: Side dish
Serves: 2

Toor dal - 1 cup
Water - 4 cups + for rinsing
Salt to taste
Turmeric powder - ¼th tsp
Ghee - 1 tbsp
Hing (asafoetida) - ¼th tsp
Jeera - 1 tsp
Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
Jaggery powder - 2 tbsp

1. Add toor dal into a sieve.
2. Rinse it well with water.
3. Transfer it into a bowl.
4. Add 2 cups of water and allow it to soak for 15 minutes.
5. Add the soaked dal in a pressure cooker with the water.
6. Add another cup of water.
7. Add salt and turmeric powder and mix well.
8. Pressure cook it for up to 4 whistles & allow it to cool.
9. Open the lid of the cooker and whisk the cooked dal.
10. Add the jaggery powder and mix well.
11. In a heated pan, add ghee and hing.
12. Add jeera and allow it to turn brown.
13. Add chilli powder.
14. Immediately add half a cup of water to avoid burning of the chilli powder.
15. Add the tadka to the dal.
16. Mix well and serve.
- 1. If it is not prepared for festivals, you can use garlic.
- 2. Coconut milk is added according to your preference.

STEP BY STEP - HOW TO MAKE VARAN BHAAT
1. Add toor dal into a sieve.
