Having two uteruses, a condition called uterus didelphys, happens when the tubes that create the uterus don't join together properly as a baby grows in the mom's belly. So, instead of having one uterus, there are two, each with its own neck.

This doesn't always cause problems, but if a person with this condition becomes pregnant, there might be extra challenges because of this unusual setup. It's like the building blocks didn't quite fit together right, making things a bit more complicated when it comes to having a baby.

While the precise cause remains unclear, it is not typically hereditary. Women with this condition can lead normal lives, and many are unaware of it until pregnancy or reproductive health concerns prompt medical investigation.

Pregnancies in both uteruses are exceptionally rare, with odds estimated at 1 in 50 million. The last widely known case was in Bangladesh in 2019, making Kelsey's journey a medical marvel. Her due date aligns with Christmas, and both babies, affectionately termed "the girlies," are thriving.

Dr Shweta Patel, Kelsey's obstetrician-gynaecologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Women & Infants Center, explained the rarity of the situation. Each egg, ovulated separately, travelled down different fallopian tubes, leading to fertilisation in each uterus independently.

Despite the complexities that often accompany double uterus pregnancies, Kelsey's three previous children were born healthy at full term.
