Sabyasachi Mukherjee On His LFW Winter Collection 2011
The designer in 12 years of his career has created waves in the fashion industry not only in India but also internationally. The Bengal tiger of fashion has showcased his new line at LFW inspired by North West Frontier Province. Sabyasachi Mukherjee's collection at the Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2011 tried to revive the trend of Khadi (contemporary fashion) and covered the mens, women and kids wear.
Talking about his Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2011 collection, Sabyasachi says, "My collection this time is based on the North West Frontier Province. It is what girls in Patiala wear while going to schools. It also has influences of Kathakali and Kathak. It's adolescent in feel yet very mature. I have used Khadi and other woven fabrics with Kashmiri thread-work, lot of texturing and zardosi. I have used bling here but in a sophisticated manner. I feel bling can look beautiful if used rightly or else it looks flashy. This collection has got a stark look."
Sabyasachi Mukherjee feels that in today's fast paced life weaving has become easy and luxurious when compared to earlier methods of weaving. He adds, "Today everything is available at the press of a button. The beauty of a woven fabric is it takes its own time as it uses traditional method of weaving. So you have to wait to get your hands on it, it's a luxury and also our strength in global market. However, many designers do not realize its worth and which is sad."
Stressing more on the traditional method of weaving, Sabyasachi Mukherjee added, "Why will any international buyer buy anything that is western and has no unique aspect to it. I strongly feel any buyer from the west, if in India, would not be keen to buy work that doesn't speak of India. Even if the silhouette is western through hand work and embroidery it needs to have our traditional feel.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in 1999 with three major awards. In four months he started his own label and in early 2001, the designer won Femina British Council's most outstanding young Designer of India award. Check out the LFW Winter Festive 2011 gallery
