This shocking and absurd tradition has been practiced in China since years. It is not only China, there are other countries like Sudan and France as well where this practice is still being followed. This wedding ritual happens between two deceased people. It is arranged by their families.
The Practice Started Because…
This bizarre Chinese ghost marriage was set up by the family of the deceased. The practice is performed for a number of reasons, which include the marriage of an engaged couple before the death of one member. This is done to integrate an unmarried daughter into a lineage, to ensure that the family line is continued. The other reason can be to maintain that no younger brother is married before an elder brother, as this is not appreciated in the society.
Matchmakers Exist For This Practice!
When a family wishes to arrange a ghost marriage, all that they need to do is consult with a matchmaker. The marriage brokers apparently hang a sign up in a doorway of a Taoist priest's home. This lets the people spread the word. Not to mention, the matches are made after matching the favourable horoscope of the deceased couple!
The Dead Are Brought Out From Their Coffins…
The bodies of the dead who are getting married are taken out from the grave and they are dressed up in the wedding attire. The wedding ceremony and rites are performed according to the Chinese custom.
The Brides Are Given A Special Treatment
The brides are given a special treatment and their bodies are pampered, as though they were alive and participating in the proceedings. These bodies are even fed at the wedding feast in the morning, before heading to the groom's house for the rituals.
The Belief About These Weddings…
The belief behind these ghost weddings is that the deceased continue to live peacefully in their afterlives. So if someone who was not married before they died, still need to be wedded after their death. For the family of a deceased woman, this weird wedding tradition is regarded as a good outcome for a deceased daughter. Otherwise, there are chances that they would not be allowed a proper burial.
