Tradition Followed...
Putting candles on birthday cakes has been a tradition that has been around for a long, long time. Few claim that it has been there since the time of ancient Greeks. Now, this is quite an old tradition people have been following.

Paying Tribute...
According to history, lighting candles was a special way in which people paid tribute to the Greek moon goddess, Artemis.

Ritual
During the ritual, people baked round cakes to symbolise the moon. And candles were added to the decoration to represent the reflected moonlight.

For Religious Reasons
The Greeks used to place candles in the centre of the cake, as it would symbolise "the light of life."

Belief
In olden days, there have been many beliefs that people blindly believed in and this is one of them. It was believed that the smoke from the candles carried their wishes and prayers to gods who lived in the skies. Hence, candles were blown on special days such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

More Beliefs...
While some believed that their wishes reached the Gods, there were a few out there who believed that the smoke helped to ward off evil spirits!

Whatever The Reason Be...
Whatever the belief has been, cutting a cake without a candle is simply incomplete. Though the reasons are lame, we're sure you would still blow the candles on every cake cutting session that you have!
