Meet The Phantoms Of Disco: Tiger & Woods
None of us had ever seen Tiger and Woods before; they are called the Phantoms of Disco. We did not know much about their kind of music either. But it changed after they warmed up at the Heineken Green Room 2 this weekend. Heineken Green Room is an event organised by Heineken beer where they bring artists with a fresh take on music to India. Before this, Mux Mool came to Heineken Green Room to talk about how music should be free.
But our first question for Tiger and Woods was, 'Is anonymity the new stardom?'

Why are you so particular about being anonymous?
Our first project together was a bootleg and we did not want to put our name on it. But the public liked it. First, we played the anonymous game and now the crowd plays the game with us. Moreover, anonymity in music has always been around. It is not something we invented.
Is it true that you don't even mark your presence in public? You play with your caps pulled down?
No. when we are playing in the clubs, the crowd can see us. But we do not want to push our faces on to the public domain. We don't want our mailbox to be filled with advertisements to promote our music. Anyways, the crowd likes our logo of the tiger better than our faces!
So what kind of music do you play?
It is not easy to label our music. If you ask a Disco lover, he would say that our music is not Disco at all. We play DJ music or dance music in clubs. We use lots of loops in our music. We pick up numbers that were done between 1982 to 1985 and add our loops to it. We basically make music from samples. That is part of why we are anonymous. It is because we are messing with someone else's track!
So is your music very Techno?
It has a very techno background but it cannot be called techno music in the purist sense.
Who are your influences?
We love bogey and funk a lot. Other than that we have various other influences.
So if you remain anonymous, how do you promote your music?
We are not hiding but we don't want to be on the forefront either. Our music is not mainstream; it is underground. So people who like this kind of music will find it. We don't believe in doing huge shows and promotions. Our music is not for the stadiums. It is DJ music to played in a dark club with low ceiling where we are getting sweaty. It is a more intimate kind of music.
In the age of social networking you do not even have a Facebook fanpage?
Djs are buying 'likes' these days. But having millions of followers on social networking sites does not mean that you have tons of true fans. We do marketing but there has to be some dignity to it.
So can we conclude by calling you Disco romantics?
Don't know about disco but we are romantics about music in general.
