As a regular internet user, you must have understood the above conversation. Words may not be enough to express our emotions at times. The ever evolving internet life has found a solution for this dilemma. It is the latest internet language that we technically call us "emotion". This interesting language is overpowering the major share of our online communication on these days.

The interesting internet language derived its technical name from the purpose it serves. Emoticons are conveying one's emotions through icons. That is why they are 'emoticons' i.e emotions + icons. A common internet user also calls them 'dhanyasree m,emotions,harvey ball,life,online dating,scott fahlman,smileys'. Many feel that the latter name will suit them better. A cute round icon, crying or rolling their eyes brings smile on every face.

A freelance artist Harvey Ball created the first emoticon of "smiley face" in yellow button with two black dots representing the eyes and a thick curve representing mouth in 1963. In 1982, a computer scientist Scott Fahlman created the original ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) emoticons :-) and :-( . The wide usage of online chats and mobile sms, popularised emoticons beyond their creators' imagination.

Currently, there are diverse styles for emoticons. The traditional emoticon in Western style is written from left to right, the way one reads and writes in most Western cultures. Thus, most commonly, you'll see the eyes on the left, followed by the nose and mouth. [:-)].
