She Was Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder
Khaliah Shaw was a student at the Georgia College and State University when she was apparently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and prescribed the medication.
It Hardly Took A Few Days' Time For The Medicine To React!
Within a month of taking the drug, she had developed a rash on her face, while the skin on her lips had started to peel off. Although she visited her local ER, she was initially diagnosed with the flu.
She Visited A Local ER
On a particular day, when she woke up due to excruciating pain, she found her skin on the face, neck, back and chest falling off and her mouth completely covered in blisters. She returned to the ER.
Medics Thought She Had An Infectious Disease
Medics were not sure what was wrong with her, hence they reportedly isolated her, fearing she had an infectious disease.
She Was Diagnosed With Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
SJS is a rare disorder that begins with flu-like symptoms, which she believes led the medics to initially mistake her illness for the flu. This is typically a reaction caused by the medication, and can even prove to be fatal.
She Was In A Medically-Induced Coma State…
Her skin continued to fall off, leaving her with huge, open wounds. Seeing her painful condition, the doctors reportedly decided to put her in a medically-induced coma to alleviate her pain.
She Woke Up After 5 Weeks!
She woke up five weeks later. She was shocked to find that she could not see and was breathing via a tracheotomy. She had even lost her hair and her fingernails were gone.
She Wrote In A Blog...
In one blog post, she wrote, 'It still haunts me to think about everything they did to me while I was in hospital. I can still hear the IV machines beeping. I never want to end up in the burn unit EVER again.'
Despite All Odds...
Despite her struggles, her hair has started to grow back and her blogging helps her to make sense of her ordeal and return to her old 'awesome, hilarious, sassy, smart and articulate' self.
