‘Simple Changes Can Make A Space Feel Lighter And Calmer’: Vastu Expert Gauri Jain On Creating A Positive Home
Sometimes, a home can feel crowded or unsettled even when there is nothing obviously wrong with it. A pile of unused things, furniture that gets in the way or a room that does not get enough light can subtly change how comfortable a space feels.
Vastu expert Gauri Jain believes that creating a more balanced home does not necessarily call for expensive renovations or major structural changes. From decluttering and improving natural light to being mindful of furniture placement and different zones, she says simple adjustments can help make a space feel calmer, lighter and more organised.
Why The Entrance Is The First Place To Look At
Sometimes, a home can feel crowded or unsettled even when there is nothing obviously wrong with it. A pile of unused things, furniture that gets in the way or a room that does not get enough light can subtly change how comfortable a space feels. The Vastu expert believes that creating a more balanced home does not necessarily call for expensive renovations or major structural changes.
Talking about the first things she observes during a Vastu assessment, Gauri says the entrance is always her starting point. "When I enter a home for a Vastu assessment, the entrance is always my first point of analysis because it is the primary transition between the external environment and the internal space. I examine its exact direction and placement, its position within the corresponding zone, proportion, level, opening, and the spaces immediately surrounding it," she explains.
She adds that her assessment does not stop at the entrance but looks at the home as a complete system. "From there, I study the house as an integrated system, its orientation, geometry, North-East and South-West balance, Brahmasthan, movement of space, placement of fire, water and earth elements," says Gauri.
Simple Vastu Changes To Make A Home Feel More Positive
For homeowners looking to make their spaces feel more positive, Gauri believes that small changes can often be effective. "Homeowners do not always need major structural changes to create a more harmonious space. Often, simple Vastu corrections can make a home feel lighter, calmer and more organised," she says.
According to her, decluttering is one of the easiest places to begin. "I usually begin with decluttering, because unnecessary accumulation can make a space feel heavy and restrict movement. Keep the North-East clean, open and well-lit, while maintaining stability. I suggest heavier elements towards the South-West," she shares.
She also recommends keeping the entrance clean and welcoming, improving natural light and ventilation, and keeping the centre of the house reasonably open. "Repair leaking taps and damaged fixtures, and avoid keeping broken or unused objects for long periods. The kitchen should be well organised, bedrooms should promote rest rather than excessive stimulation, and electronic clutter should be minimised," Gauri adds.
How Furniture Placement Can Affect The Feel Of A Space
Furniture placement is another aspect Gauri considers important. "Heavy furniture placed in the wrong zones can make a room feel compressed or unbalanced, while thoughtful placement can improve circulation, light, ventilation and functionality," she says.
Traditionally, she explains, heavier storage and furniture are preferred towards the South, West and South-West, while the North-East and central area are generally kept lighter and more open.
Which Areas Of A Home Need More Attention?
Speaking about the areas of a home that are particularly important for peace and harmony, Gauri points towards the North-East, South-West, Brahmasthan, bedrooms and the main entrance.
"The North-East should be clean, light and open; the South-West should provide stability and grounding; the Brahmasthan should remain uncluttered; bedrooms should support restful sleep and healthy relationships; and the main entrance should be well-positioned, clean and unobstructed," she says.
Why Decluttering Matters In Vastu
Gauri also highlights the importance of cleanliness and maintaining a clutter-free environment. "In Vastu, cleanliness and clutter-free spaces are important because they support the free movement and balance of energy within the home. Clutter can make a space feel heavy, blocked and chaotic, particularly in sensitive areas such as the North-East and Brahmasthan," she explains.
Vastu Tips That Do Not Require Expensive Renovations
For those who do not want to spend heavily on renovations, Gauri Jain suggests starting with practical adjustments. "You do not always need expensive renovations to improve the Vastu of a home. Start with simple changes: declutter the North-East and centre of the house, keep the main entrance clean and unobstructed, improve natural light and ventilation, repair leaking taps and broken fixtures, avoid unnecessary storage under beds, and keep the South-West relatively stable and heavier," she says.
She further suggests rearranging furniture to improve movement, removing unused objects and maintaining cleanliness, describing these as simple, low-cost steps that can improve both the Vastu balance and the overall feel of a home.
Should Some Areas Be Kept Free From Heavy Obstruction?
On whether certain directions should be kept free from heavy obstruction, Gauri says, "Yes. In Vastu, North-East and the Brahmasthan, centre, are the areas I would be most careful about blocking or heavily loading. The North and East are also generally kept relatively open to support light, movement and openness."
She explains that heavy storage, bulky furniture, staircases or unnecessary construction in these areas can make a space feel congested.
"The principle is not that every direction must remain completely empty, but that weight, openness and function should be distributed appropriately according to the direction and the overall Vastu of the house," she adds.
Why Natural Sunlight Is Important In A Home
Natural sunlight is another important element in her approach. "In Vastu, natural sunlight represents light, vitality and positive energy in a space. Proper sunlight helps keep the home bright, fresh and active, while reducing feelings of darkness, dampness and stagnation," Gauri says.
She concludes, "Traditionally, morning sunlight from the East is considered especially beneficial, and a well-lit home is generally seen as more balanced and harmonious."
Simple Changes For A More Balanced Home
The idea of a harmonious home does not always have to involve changing everything at once. A clearer entrance, fewer unused belongings, better movement between rooms and more natural light can all make a home feel different in everyday life.
For those who follow Vastu, these simple adjustments can also be a practical starting point for creating a space that feels more organised, comfortable and balanced.
