Gandhi Jayanti 2026: 10 Places In India Where You Can Experience Mahatma Gandhi’s Legacy
Across India, ashrams, museums, memorials and historic buildings preserve different chapters of Mahatma Gandhi's life - from his childhood and political work to the Salt Satyagraha and his final days. The Ministry of Culture's Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission has identified 39 core heritage sites associated with Gandhiji. For Gandhi Jayanti 2026, these 10 places in India offer a way to understand Mahatma Gandhi beyond portraits, statues and textbook accounts.
1. Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad
Gandhiji lived at Sabarmati Ashram from 1917 to 1930. It became an important centre of his work and the starting point of the Dandi March on March 12, 1930.
2. Kirti Mandir, Porbandar
Located beside Gandhiji's ancestral home, Kirti Mandir marks his birthplace. Gandhiji was born here on 2 October 1869, making it particularly relevant to 2 October Gandhi Jayanti.
3. Mani Bhavan, Mumbai
This modest house in Gamdevi was the focal point of Gandhi's activities in Mumbai between 1917 and 1934. Several important campaigns and meetings associated with his political work took place here.
4. Sevagram Ashram, Wardha
Founded in 1936, Sevagram became Gandhi's base for rural reconstruction and constructive work. Bapu Kuti, his cottage, and Adi Nivas, the ashram's first hut, remain important parts of the site.
5. Aga Khan Palace, Pune
The palace is associated with Gandhiji's detention during the Quit India Movement, as well as the deaths of Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai during their imprisonment.
6. National Salt Satyagraha Memorial, Dandi
Dandi was the destination of Gandhjii's 1930 Salt March. The memorial recreates the journey through sculptures, murals and installations that explain the march and Satyagraha.
7. Gandhi Smriti, New Delhi
Gandhi Smriti, housed in the Old Birla House, preserves the place where Gandhiji spent his final 144 days, from September 9, 1947, until January 30, 1948.
8. Raj Ghat, New Delhi
Raj Ghat is the memorial at the site of Gandhiji's last rites. It remains one of the most recognised places associated with his memory.
9. Gandhi Museum, Madurai
Housed in the historic Tamukkam Palace, the museum documents the freedom struggle and Gandhian movement through photographs, relics and other collections.
10. Champaran, Bihar
Champaran is closely associated with Gandhi's 1917 Satyagraha and his work with indigo farmers. The Gandhi Circuit includes sites connected with this campaign and his wider social work.
A Different Way To Mark Gandhi Jayanti 2026
For Gandhi Jayanti 2026, visiting one of these places can put familiar historical events into a physical setting. Whether it is the ashram where Gandhiji worked, the birthplace where his story began or the Delhi house where his life ended, each site offers a different perspective on the person behind the national icon. Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 can therefore be more than a commemorative date - it can also be an opportunity to explore the places that preserve his journey.
