How Do You Tell Normal Stress From Something More Serious? Expert Explains
Drishyam: The Conclusion — Everything You Need To Remember Before Watching The New Film
'Drishyam: The Conclusion' has finally arrived, bringing Ajay Devgn back as Vijay Salgaonkar for the third and final chapter of the Hindi franchise. If you remember the broad story but have forgotten exactly how Vijay got his family out of trouble in the first two films, here's the refresher you need before heading to the theatre.
1. It All Started With Sam's Death
In 'Drishyam' (2015), Vijay lives in Goa with his wife Nandini and daughters Anju and Anu. His quiet family life changes when Sam Deshmukh, the son of police officer Meera Deshmukh, dies accidentally after a confrontation involving Anju.
Vijay decides to protect his daughter and constructs an elaborate story to make it appear that the family was elsewhere when Sam disappeared.
2. Remember October 2
This is the detail you definitely want fresh in your mind.
Vijay creates an alibi around October 2, telling his family to remember that they travelled to Panaji, attended a satsang, ate pav bhaji, watched a film and returned on October 3. Bus tickets, movie tickets and restaurant bills help support their story.
He makes every member of the family memorise the same sequence of events. That is why October 2 became almost synonymous with 'Drishyam' and eventually turned into an annual social-media meme.
3. Seven Years Later, The Past Returns
'Drishyam 2' picks up seven years after Sam's death. Vijay has become more successful and even owns a cinema hall, reflecting his long-standing obsession with movies.
But Meera has not forgotten her son. The investigation gets a fresh lead when David, a witness who claims to have seen Vijay burying the body, comes forward. The Salgaonkars once again find themselves under pressure.
4. Vijay's Biggest Trick In Drishyam 2
Vijay once again turns his knowledge of cinema into a strategy. He commissions screenwriter Murad Ali to develop a film based on the events surrounding Sam's death, with changes to the story that can later help him challenge the police's case.
The police eventually recover skeletal remains from beneath the police-station construction site. But Vijay has arranged for different remains to be substituted before DNA testing. The forensic evidence therefore fails to establish that the skeleton belongs to Sam. Vijay and his family escape conviction.
5. What Happened To Sam's Remains?
There is one more detail from Drishyam 2 worth remembering. After the police recover a skeleton from beneath the police-station construction site, Vijay's plan ensures that the DNA test does not establish it as Sam's remains. But Vijay does not simply leave the matter there.
He secretly obtains Sam's actual remains, has them cremated and anonymously sends the ashes to Sam's parents, Meera and Mahesh Deshmukh. They are finally able to perform their son's last rites, bringing a measure of closure after years of uncertainty.
Where The Conclusion Begins
The new film brings back Vijay, Nandini, Anju, Anu and Meera, while introducing Jaideep Ahlawat as Crime Branch officer Rajveer Singh Tomar and Prakash Raj as advocate Indrajit Shetty. A new investigation once again puts Vijay's carefully protected past under scrutiny.
One useful thing to know before watching: the Hindi 'Drishyam: The Conclusion' has an original story and is not simply a remake of the Malayalam 'Drishyam 3'.
So, before the opening credits roll, remember three things: Sam, October 2 and Vijay's ability to think several steps ahead. Everything else follows from the elaborate story he has spent years building around his family.
