Jitiya Vrat 2026: Why Mothers Observe The Nirjala Fast, Paran Timings And Rituals Explained
Jitiya Vrat, also known as Jivitputrika Vrat or Jiutiya, is a Hindu observance traditionally followed by mothers who pray for the health, safety and longevity of their children. The festival is particularly prominent in Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh and is marked by a strict fasting tradition. Jitiya Vrat 2026, the observance began with Nahay Khay on October 2, followed by the main Jitiya fast on October 3 and Paran on October 4.
The vrat is associated with the story of King Jimutavahana, whose act of sacrifice forms an important part of its religious tradition. Along with fasting, devotees perform prayers and listen to the Jitiya Vrat Katha, making the occasion a time of devotion and reflection on the bond between parents and children.
Jitiya Vrat 2026: Dates And Tithi
The main Jitiya Vrat falls on Saturday, October 3, 2026. It is observed during Krishna Paksha Ashtami in the Hindu month of Ashwin.
The three-day observance follows this sequence:
October 2: Nahay Khay
October 3: Jitiya Vrat and Nirjala fast
October 4: Paran
The Ashtami tithi extends from October 3 into October 4. Since Panchang calculations and fasting timings are location-specific, devotees should follow the timings applicable to their location.
What Is Jitiya Vrat?
The main fast is traditionally Nirjala, meaning devotees refrain from both food and water. However, fasting practices can differ between families and regions.
The observance is centred on prayers for children's well-being and is traditionally associated with maternal devotion and sacrifice. The vrat remains particularly important in eastern and northern parts of India.
The Story Of King Jimutavahana
The religious tradition behind Jitiya is linked to King Jimutavahana, who is remembered for offering himself to save a naga from Garuda. His willingness to sacrifice himself is considered a symbol of compassion and selflessness.
Devotees traditionally hear or recite the Jitiya Vrat Katha during the observance. In some regional traditions, the story also includes the cheel (eagle) and siyarin (jackal), which have become associated with the ritual.
When Is Jitiya Vrat Paran 2026?
The fast will be concluded with Paran on October 4, 2026. The exact time should be checked according to the local Panchang because sunrise and tithi timings vary by location. Published timings may therefore differ between cities.
Jitiya Vrat combines a demanding fasting practice with stories centred on sacrifice and protection. For families who observe it, the occasion remains closely tied to prayers for their children's future and the traditions passed down through generations.
