Top 5 Natural Relaxation Drinks
In moments of extreme tension, many of us reach out for what we think are the perfect beverages to reduce stress. However, we do not realise that these drinks, such as coffee or alcohol, are in fact making the problem worse.
Coffee can give you a burst of artificial energy and help you cope with difficult situations, but the caffeine will stress your system over time and cause insomnia – which is the leading cause and effect of stress.
FOODS TO CURE ANXIETY NATURALLY
If you’ve had an argument with the boss or with a loved one, drowning your sorrows in alcohol is a common response. However, this is one of the worst beverages to reduce stress. Alcohol is a mood depressant and its addiction can lead to increased tolerance and mood swings – the opposite effect you want from drinks that reduce stress.
While your approach to reducing stress must include lifestyle and diet changes, and exercise, there are small, pleasurable modifications you can bring to your everyday life. Drinking certain beverages to reduce stress is one of them. All these five natural relaxation drinks are easy to find or prepare, and will give you long term benefits.

Green tea
This is one of the preferred natural relaxation drinks. Green tea contains antioxidants which play a big role in stabilising your health and giving you a feeling of overall well-being. It also promotes the production of a vital amino acid, which is known to have a calming, relaxing effect. For best results, have it without sugar. Try a decaf version if you are having it at night.

Milk
This may come as a bit of a surprise but milk boosts serotonin in our blood through the action of another amino acid, tryptophan. Serotonin is a chemical mood enhancer produced in the brain that creates a feeling of happiness and well-being. This puts milk right up there with other drinks that reduce stress. Have it cold or warm, according to your preference. Avoid adding artificial flavouring powders if you want to keep it healthy.

Avocado smoothie
Avocado or butterfruit is known to lower blood pressure and stress hormones. To really enjoy it, have it in smoothie form. Take a soft, ripe avocado and scoop out the flesh. Run it in the blender with yoghurt, milk and some honey for sweetness. This is a wonderfully relaxing, filling and healthy way to start the day on a stress free note.

Orange juice
Orange juice packs vitamin C, which boosts the body's immunity, and is linked to the reduced production of stress hormones. Hence, that makes orange juice as one of the top drinks to reduce stress. Its citrus, acidic nature flushes out your toxins and cleanses your stomach and skin. Opt to have it unsweetened or with a dash of honey for best effect.

Chamomile tea
Most herbal teas qualify as drinks that reduce stress, and this is true of Chamomile tea, valued for generations as one of the best beverages to reduce stress and induce sleep. This herbal infusion tea is ideal because it calms nerves and aids sleep. It is available commercially or can be made by steeping dried chamomile flowers in hot water. The best way to have it is with lime and honey.
