Most people have no conception of a real 'burnout' and that is why, they go on being a workaholic until it catches up with them. It is good to be hard working, but if your job saps you of all your energy, then you are heading towards a burnout. The signs of a burnout are not always as obvious as we think. But we do know that chronic stress and multiple stress factors are the reasons a person goes through burnout. Know the signs of burnout at work so that you can avoid it.
Burnout is a serious health and career issue. If you ignore the signs of a burnout, you will lose your job and end up in rehab soon enough. So take the signs of burnout at work very seriously. The burnout symptoms might seem like fatigue sometimes. But if you observe yourself over a period of time, you will realise whether you are just tired or you are heading towards a burnout.
The most important thing is to listen to the people who are close to you. Your near and dear ones observe you much more keenly than you do yourself. That is why; you should always pay heed to what your family has to do say about your state of body and mind. Burnout is a stress related health problem and as is the nature of such ailments, its signs are hidden.
Here are some signs of burnout that should be treated like red flags. Check to see if you have them.
Short Term Memory Loss
Do you have a bad memory or have you been forgetting things only lately? Do you lose your keys, phone and other important things off late? This shows that chronic stress is interfering with your short term memory.
Not Caring About How You Look
It is the sign of a normal healthy individual to be bothered about how he/she looks. But if your haircut has been due for more than a month and you do not have the time to wash your face, then you are not paying attention to yourself. It is a sign of psychological problems.
Negativity
When you are nearing a mental burnout at work, you start feeling negative about everything around you. All this negativity occurs because you perceive everything as a threat to your job and your current lifestyle.
Inability To Switch Off
Do you carry your work home? And when you do so, are you unable to switch off your laptop or pad even when it is well past your bedtime? Being preoccupied with work when you are not in office is a sign of a burnout.
Feeling De-Motivated
You were once a self-motivated, bright-eyed employee. But now, you literally drag yourself to office. And even when you are there in office, you cannot concentrate on work.
Slipping Work Performance
Your team lead or boss is the best person to tell you if you are heading towards a burnout. Your work performance will slip and you will not be able to deliver because you are constantly stressed out.
Relationship Problems
You will also have problems on the home front when you are facing burnout. Your family will complain that you do not give them time and your spouse/partner is usually worst hit by this problem.
Exhaustion
You are physically and mentally exhausted of living in a stressed situation constantly. Your exhaustion is no more due to physical tiredness. You can wake up from a good night's sleep and still feel exhausted.
Inability To Concentrate
You are ignoring everything in your life because of your work. But even when it comes to work, you are unable to concentrate on it 100 percent. This shows that you are mentally and emotionally unstable.
Being Unmindful
Do your colleagues and friends complain that you only pretend to hear them? You think you are hearing but what they are saying never registers on your mind because you are always preoccupied with issues that are stressing you out.
