Exclusive: With Obesity On the Rise in India, Doctor Shares Early Warning Signs That You Must Not Miss
Obesity is an escalating health issue globally, with significant implications for individuals' overall well-being. India is potentially on the brink of an obesity crisis, with young people particularly at risk, particularly due to its association with chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and certain cancers. Early detection of obesity is crucial for preventing these complications.
In an exclusive interview with Boldsky, Dr Satish N, Senior Consultant & Bariatric Surgery, General Surgery, from Manipal Hospital, shares the reasons of obesity and the early warning signs that one can avoid.

"Obesity is an established high-risk factor for several non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers, there is an urgent need to address obesity and its associated health challenges," says Dr Satish N.
A global study published by The Lancet revealed that 12.5 million children (7.3 million boys and 5.2 million girls) aged between 5 and 19 were significantly overweight in 2022, which is a stark increase from just 0.4 million in 1990.
Also, according to the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) conducted in 2019-2021, 24% of women and 23% of men aged 15-49 were overweight or obese. Studies from 2022 reveal 12.5 million children and adolescents aged 5-19 in India, were identified as overweight or obese.
What Are The Causes of Obesity?
Dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, stress, and genetic and hereditary factors are a few of the identified causes of obesity. Adding to the woes are rapid urbanization, economic growth, food globalization, and cultural shifts have also significantly changed the approach toward food and its consumption.
More and more people are now shifting from traditional diets to a more Westernized diet that predominantly consists of processed and fast foods rich in fats and sugars. Such foods are often calorie-dense and low on nutritional profile, which collectively contributes to obesity.
"With current fast-paced modern life, mental health problems have become a common problem affecting many. A major proportion of the population is now suffering with mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, sleep deprivation, and are resorting to emotional eating as a coping mechanism which are in turn contributing to weight gain," highlights Dr Satish N.
Early Warning Signs Of Obesity That You Must Not Miss
In addition to the aforementioned causes, limited understanding of balanced diets, underestimation of the long-term health risks associated with obesity, and lack of awareness in identifying the early warning signs, are other potent causes of obesity prevalence. Dr Satish N lists out the following as early warning signs of obesity.
- Unexplained and drastic weight gain in a very short duration, that continues to consistently increase
- Increase in waist circumference and abdominal fat accumulation often noticed as the need for bigger-sized clothes
- Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing with mild physical exertion
- Joint pains especially in the knees and back pain
- Low energy levels and easy fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping, snoring, and sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep)
- Pigmentation, dark, and scaly skin patches particularly around the neck and armpits
- Body image issues and low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety
Therefore, it is crucial that obese and overweight individuals aim for sustainable weight loss with consistent effort and commitment to healthy habits. Gradual changes and mindful lifestyle choices to assure a healthier and happier life.
