How To Make Haldi Doodh For Cough + 10 Health Benefits Of Drinking Turmeric Milk
Here's how you can make haldi doodh, or turmeric milk, for cough and also listed are its 10 amazing benefits.
If you thought drinking "golden milk or lattes" (a.k.a turmeric milk) is just a fad of this decade, then you would be wrong because Indian households have used this simple recipe for centuries to treat ailments ranging from a simple bout of cough and cold to a complex case of arthritis.
And though the taste of turmeric milk can be awful if consumed without a spoon of honey or sugar, it is an age-old proven home remedy for curing cough in just a matter of few days.
So, here's a simple and easy recipe for making haldi doodh (a.k.a turmeric milk) for cough.
You Will Need:-
- 1 cup of Milk
- ½ tsp of Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp of Honey
Total cook time: 5 min
Serves: 1
Step 1: Milk + Honey
Take a saucepan, heat it over medium flame, and then pour the milk into it. Next, add 1 teaspoon of honey and mix well.
Step 2: Add Turmeric Powder
Next, add ½ a teaspoon of turmeric powder to the milk and mix it well until the milk turns into a uniform golden-yellow colour.
Step 3: Bring It To A Boil
Bring the mixture to a boil and then allow it to simmer in the pan for the next 3-5 minutes.
Step 4: Serve Hot
Pour the turmeric milk in a cup and allow it to rest for a while, so you don't scald your tongue. But make sure you drink it hot, as that will provide relief to your sore throat.
Additional instruction: Drink turmeric milk twice a day for at least three days for best results.
The Superpowers Of Turmeric Milk
Turmeric milk has a track record of successfully combating ailments since the ancient times. Here are just a few that science has managed to understand so far.
#1 It is potent against cough and cold.
Numerous studies have shown that turmeric has phenomenal antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, mainly because of its chief constituent, Curcumin.
In fact, the reason why turmeric mild (a.k.a haldi doodh) is the favourite recipe for cough in India is because this drink has the ability to increase your mucus production, which flushes out toxins and microbes from your respiratory tract, thus improving your condition by leaps and bounds.
#2 It improves your general immunity.
Drinking a warm cup of turmeric milk on an empty stomach every day is a great way of improving your immunity, especially if you are a swimmer or you regularly take the public transport, which exposes you to a host of disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and microbes.
#3 It enhances your digestive abilities + gets rid of intestinal worms.
From simple digestive problems, like bloating, flatulence, and heartburn, to complex problems like worm infestation, turmeric milk is extremely beneficial for your gastrointestinal tract.
#4 It flushes out toxins from your liver and blood.
The medicinal compounds in turmeric are very good for your liver and have the ability to flush out toxins and reverse liver damage caused by alcohol and medicine use. This in turn improves the quality of your blood and purifies it.
Plus, turmeric boosts bile production in your gall bladder, which prevents gall stone formation with age.
#5 It prevents ageing and improves the condition of your skin.
Curcumin, the active medicinal compound in turmeric, is a powerful antioxidant, which is why it is very effective at preventing the signs of ageing, like fine lines, wrinkles, liver spots, skin tags, and acne.
Plus, it is also known to lighten scars, if not remove them altogether.
#6 It is effective against autoimmune diseases.
Autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis and eczema, are odd in the sense that they are caused by the body's own immune system because of (mostly) unknown triggers. And drinking turmeric milk is very effective against them, as turmeric has the ability to modulate our immune system and prevent such attacks on the self.
#7 It is a good remedy for headaches caused by sinusitis.
Sinusitis is a condition where the natural, hollow air sinuses in our skull become filled with mucus. This leads to the feeling of heaviness in the head, intense headaches, and flu-like symptoms. And turmeric milk is an excellent remedy for this because curcumin is very good at increasing mucus flow and reducing its viscosity, which enables mucus drainage from the air sinuses and reverses sinusitis.
#8 It can help you sleep.
Turmeric milk is very good for those suffering from insomnia, as it is rich in the essential amino acid, Tryptophan, which is needed for the production of the sleep-inducing hormones serotonin and melatonin in the body.
#9 It enhances the female reproductive health.
Turmeric milk is very good for women who want to conceive a child, as it improves their fertility. Plus, it is also effective at reducing menstrual pain.
Just remember to stay away from it once you are pregnant, as turmeric can induce abortion as well.
#10 It has anti-cancerous properties and can prevent malignant transformation of cells.
Studies have shown that turmeric is very effective at destroying nascent cancerous cells before they can form a tumour, especially in the case of colon, skin, breast, prostate, and lung cancers.
And if you have stage I or II cancer, drinking turmeric milk can prevent it from transforming into the fatal end-stage forms.
