Like various other parts of our body, eyelids and eyelashes are also vulnerable to illnesses. Our eyelashes contain oil glands that can become clogged or because of some kind of an infection, they can cause the eyelids to swell. This ailment is called blepharitis or eyelid inflammation.
Blepharitis can be of two types: anterior and posterior. While the first occurs on the outside of the eyes, the latter occurs in the interior corners.
The exact reason why blepharitis occurs is not known. But factors like dandruff, allergic reactions, side effects of medicines, bacterial infections, etc., are known to increase the risk of blepharitis.

1. Neem: Neem is very helpful in controlling dandruff to treat eyelid inflammation. Dandruff is seen as one of the causes of blepharitis, and neem is excellent in getting rid of dandruff, thanks to its antibacterial properties. Neem also reduces itching on the scalp. Boil some neem leaves in four cups of water. Rinse your hair with the solution two-three times in a week to get rid of the dandruff.
2. Coconut oil: Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties. This home ingredient also soothes inflammation, itching, pain, etc. Dip a cotton swab in coconut oil and place it on the affected eyelids. Do this many times in a day. You can also massage the affected area with some coconut oil.
3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: They help in easing blepharitis. They help in proper functioning of the meibomian glands that help in lubricating the eyes and eyelids. Have adequate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish, flax seeds and walnuts. Talk to your doctor for the right dosage.
4. Castor Oil: This is also an effective way to treat blepharitis, as the ricinoleic acid in it treats inflammation. It also cures the burning sensation, itching, pain, etc., that are caused because of blepharitis. Soak a cotton swab in organic castor oil and keep it on your eyelids for sometime before going to sleep. Wash it the next morning with warm water. Do this once every day.
5. Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is very useful in treating symptoms of blepharitis, like inflammation and itching. Mix two to three drops of tea tree oil with one tablespoon of coconut or olive oil. You can also soak a cotton swab in the solution and wash your eyelids with this solution. Do this twice daily.
