Moong Dal Sambhar: Breakfast Recipe
Idli, dosa, sambar vada and different types of rice are popular breakfast ideas in South India. Idli is easy to digest, low in fats and calories and most importantly, filling. Idlis are easy to prepare and can be teamed up with sambhar, chutney or idli powder.

Moong dal sambhar, breakfast recipe:

Serves: 3
Preparation time: 5-10 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
- Moong dal- 1 1/2 cup
- Onion- 2 (chopped)
- Garlic- 4-5 pods (minced or peeled)
- Tomato- 1 (chopped)
- Turmeric powder- 1¼ tsp
- Red chilli powder- 2tsp
- Coriander powder- 2tsp
- Tamarind pulp- 1tbsp
- Sambhar powder- 1tsp
- Jaggery/sugar- ½ tsp
- Curry leaves- 3
- Mustard- 1tsp
- Cumin seeds- 1tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 1½ tbsp
Procedure
- Wash moong dal in waster until clean. Pressure cook for a duration of 7-8 whistles.
- Let the pressure release. Open the lid and then add tamarind pulp, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, sambar powder and salt. Mix and keep aside.
- Heat oil in a deep-bottomed pan. Season with cumin and mustard seeds. When the seeds start to splutter, add curry leaves and after a few seconds, add onions and garlic.
- Once the onions become translucent, add chopped tomatoes.
- When the tomatoes become pulpy, add pressure cooked dal. Pour little water if required. Mix well and bring it to boil. Cook till the sambar thickens.
Moong dal sambar is ready. It is an easy breakfast recipe that can be teamed up with idlis and coconut chutney.
