Saree is the national dress of India. This garment has been worn in India from time immemorial. However, the saree draping styles keep changing. The way you drape a saree determines your style statement. There are several saree draping styles that are popular all over India. We have the special Bengali way for saree draping. There is a also Gujarati saree draping style. These are mainly the traditional ways to drape a saree.

But other saree styles that are contemporary are also equally popular. For example, the coiled saree style was invented by yester years actress Mumtaz. We can still visualize her wearing a coiled orange saree in the song, 'aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charchay'. This saree draping style has come back into fashion lately.

There are also the usual saree styles like the pleated pallu or loose pallu that are very common. Here are some of the fashionable saree draping styles that you should try.

Pleated Pallu

This is neat way to wear a saree that allows you flaunt your waist. You can also show off your blouse design with this saree style. An expert tip; pleat the pallu before you pleat the saree around your waist to keep it even.

Loose Pallu

The loose pallu style is a romantic and glamourous way to drape your saree. This is particularly useful when you are wearing a clingy material like chiffon or net.

Front Drape Pallu

This is a contemporary way to drape your saree. You can try this when you are wearing a heavy and long blouse that comes up to your hips.

Bengali Saree Style

The traditional Bengali way to drape a saree is without pleats. The pallu goes across one of your shoulders. The loose end of the pallu is then taken from behind and tucked over your other shoulder. Ideally you should be wearing traditional Bengali sarees like Dhakai and Baluchori in this way.

Gujarati Saree Style

In the Gujarati style, the pallu comes over your shoulder instead falling across your arm. The pallu is then opened up and one of its loose ends is tucked into the waist. This allows you to display the entire length of your pallu.

Navari Saree Style

This saree style is popular in Maharashtra and Goa. You need a 9-yard saree instead of the normal 6-yards one. This saree is draped from in between the legs like dhoti. It is easy to move around in a Navari saree when compared to a normal saree.

Coiled Saree

As we have already said, the coiled saree is a innovation of Mumtaz. It makes the saree look like a dress. These are two contemporary improvisations of the coiled saree style.

Squared Pallu

In this style, the pallu should form a perfect square with your blouse. The pallu is then pleated and this gives you a perfectly squared neckline.

V-Pallu

This style makes you form a 'V' with the pallu of your saree across your chest. Take the pallu from over your shoulder like you do in the Gujarati style. Then fold the pallu into a 'V' and pin the loose end to your other shoulder blade.
