What You Should Never Do To Your Grey Hair?
Are silver strands sprouting long before you are ready? Did you ever wake up in the morning, and are surprised by grey strands peppering your hair seemingly out of nowhere? That's why, we're here to help you and we've listed out the things to not do if you have grey hair, keep reading!
If a recent study is anything to go by, 3 out of 5 women are getting grey hair well before they reach their 30's. And some men even get it as early as their teens.
The first time we get grey hair, immediate reaction is mostly, confusion. Should we pluck it or not? Will dying camouflage it? Should we go for a natural dye or a synthetic one?
So many questions and no answers! There are certain things you should do and should not do. And here, we shall discuss things that are best avoided!
Popping open a bottle of dye is not going to send those white hair strands undercover. White hair tends to be stiffer and coarse, which makes it twice as hard to cover.
What causes white hair?
When new hair strands grow, the pigment-producing cells called melanocytes give the hair its colour. Overtime, the melanin production in your body reduces, giving your hair a grey cast.
Though level of pigment in the body depends on the genetic factors, there are external factors that can disrupt the level as well, like hormonal imbalance, stress, poor diet and more.
So, have a look at the things to not do if you have grey hair.
DON'T: Plucking Hair
No, plucking hair does not lead to more grey hair. However, grey hair texture tends to be rough than naturally pigmented hair. And when you pull it out, it will grow out just as white and coarse as it was before. So, it is best left untouched.
DON'T: Pluck From Roots
What you should never do if you have grey hair is pluck to it from the roots. Because if the hair is plucked and the scalp is red, chances are you have cut the hair from the blood supply, in which case it won't grow back again.
DON'T: Ignoring Grey Hair
Another thing to not do if you have gray hair is to ignore it. Though the genetic structure decides the amount of pigmented hair you have on your head. Sometimes, it is as simple as zinc and iron deficiency. So, unless you want to end up with head full of silver shiny strands, look into what is causing it and address it accordingly.
DON'T: Smoking
Smoking expedites the body's ageing process. It won't just dwindle the melanin level, but also loosen hair from roots, causing excessive shedding, and in some cases, even balding. So, do a favour to yourself, quit smoking today.
DON'T: Washing Hair Every Day
Washing hair every day strips the hair of its natural oil, makes hair brittle and prone to breakage. And it has no impact on white hair, what so ever at all. So, forget the age-old tale and follow a healthy hair wash routine, which is 2 to 3 times a week.
DON'T: Ammonia Dye
Another thing you should not do if you have grey hair is lap it up with ammonia-based hair dyes. They might give you temporary relief from white hair, but not without a cost, which is chocking your hair follicles and triggering hair fall. So, go with organic dyes instead.
DON'T: Skipping The Regular Trimming
When you have grey hair, it is of utmost importance to keep the hair in good health and maintain a sleek look. It will make grey hair less glaringly obvious. So, don't skip it, get a trim in ever 6 to 8 weeks.
DON'T: Using The Same Shampoo
Going with the do's and don'ts of grey hair, NEVER use the same shampoo for a prolonged period of time. Change in hair colour and texture is a clear indication that your hair requires more. So, go with a hair product that is specifically designed for grey hair.
DO: Lemon Rinse
Sometimes, simple home remedies can bring about a world of difference to greying of hair. Like this simple tip. Mix 1/4th cup of lemon juice to 2 cups of warm water. After shampooing, give your hair a last rinse with the solution. Citric acid is known to restore the pigment back in grey hair.
DON'T: Never Compromise on Proteins
It is what you eat that eventually reflects on your hair and skin. And one vitamin that decides the vitality of your hair is vitamin B. So, stock up on lean meat, egg, and crunchy veggies for thick, dark, and shiny hair.
DO: Avoid Alcohol-based Products
Another thing to avoid if you have grey hair is using alcohol-based products. Grey hair tends to be naturally coarser and rough, and alcohol-based products will only serve to make it more frizzy and dry. Avoid weighing hair with heavy products. Go light, and give your hair some breathing space.
DO: Research Before Colouring
If you decide to dye your grey hair, invest time on research. Your decision should be based on 3 pre-dominatory factors that are colouring options available, what kind of maintenance will be required, and the length of time the colour will last.
