The skin on your knees tends to be thicker than the rest of your body. Also, there are no oil glands in this area, which makes it dry and prone to becoming dark, when not taken enough care off.

Other factors that contribute to the condition include frequent chafing, genetics, sun exposure, dead skin buildup and hormonal imbalance, to name a few.

First thing's first, apply moisturiser on your elbows and knees as often as you can to keep it from getting dry.

Sulphur and citric acid present in this mask help break down the dead-skin buildup and lighten the skin. Peel, cut and dice one onion. Grind it into a smooth paste. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice and glycerin to the mixture. Apply it to your knees. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Later, scrub and rinse.

Essential vitamins present in besan exfoliate the skin, turmeric lightens the blemishes and yogurt moisturises the skin.

Take a tablespoon of besan, add a pinch of turmeric and a required amount of yogurt, to whip it all in a smooth paste. Apply it to the knees, wait for 30 minutes, and then scrub and rinse. You can also use this mask to exfoliate your entire body.

Acetic acid present in vinegar works as a chemical peel removing tan. Take a few drops of vinegar on a cotton ball, dab it on your knees. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water.

Vitamin C is present in ample in orange peel, which can lighten your skin tone. Put orange peel out in the sun to dry. Grind it into a fine powder. Take a teaspoon of the powder in a bowl, add a required amount of rose water, whip it into a smooth paste. Apply it to your knees and wait till it dries. Later, scrub and rinse.

Potato has a natural bleaching agent that can remove blemishes and whiten the skin. Take 1 boiled potato, mash it into a fine paste. Add a few drops of lemon and apply it to the affected area.
