A Holy Dip During Ganga Dusshera
Devotees indulge in the holy dip to seek the blessings of Mother Ganges to purge themselves of their sins, according to the popular belief that a dip in the Ganges is bound to bestow liberation to the dying and fresh life for those living.
Having its origin in Gangotri, in the snow clad , Ganges is the largest river in India. According to the legend, mankind was blessed with Ganges as a result of the great penance of King Bhagirath because of which the river is called Bhagirathi.
"Today is Ganga Dusshehra. On this day, Ganga descended on earth from heaven. Today, we all are taking holy dip in River Ganga so that we can get rid of our sins," said Gopal Tyagi, a priest who did his worship devoutly on 21st June 2010.
