Alathur Temple: Divinity, Where The Gods Fold Their Hands

Agnikriyapuram (Aalathiyooram) is a divine place where many saints completed and still believed to continue their journey into the celestial bliss. The history of Alathur temple believed to be, dates back to Dwapara age (The age of the divine birth of Lord Sri Krishna). Lord Maha Vishnu presides in this temple in his complete form and grace.

It is believed that in the Dwapara age, Sri Hanuman experienced the divine presence of Lord Sri Krishna. However he was doubtful that whether Lord Sri Krishna is greater than Lord Sri Rama. Lord Maha Vishnu appeared before his dearest devotee in the forms OF Lord Sri Krishna and Lord Sri Rama. Henceforth Sri Hanuman resides in this temple to bless and help the devotees of his Lord.

The saint named Vilwamangalam Swamiyar first experienced the divine presence of Sri Hanuman at this divine place. He was returning from a pilgrimage and unaware of Alathur temple. As he neared this place he experienced the divine presence of Sri Hanuman on his umbrella. He saw this great temple and realized that the divine devotee had brought him for the blessings of Lord Maha Vishnu. Henceforth the saintly soul spent his life at the service of Lord Maha Vishnu at Alathur temple.

The divine presence in this temple has been witnessed at many instances. It is believed that all the Gods come to seek the divine presence of Lord Maha Vishnu at this temple, particularly during dawn. The presence of 'Sudarsanam" along with Lord Maha Vishnu is one of the exemplary divinities in this temple. Devotees worship 'Sudarsanam" to guard themselves from enemies. In a same manner the divine devotee guards the spiritual seekers of his Lord. Parents bring their infants to His presence to guard them from nightmares, health problems, and mental troubles to ensure a bright future. Eminent musicians devote their voice at His presence.

The 'Upadevathas" (Gods) in this temple are Mangala Ganapathi, Sree Dharma Shastavu, Lord Adisesha and Guru. Devotees seek the blessings of Mangala Ganapathi to ward off evils, for a suitable alliance and a happy married life. It is believed that as you seek the blessings of Sree Dharma Shastavu, the effects of 'Shani" won"t torment you.

The months of May, June and July are most auspicious to visit this temple since it is believed that Lord Sri Rama was born in the month of Karkitaka (In between May and June).
