Pregnancy Glow: Is It Real? Does The Skin Really Glow During Pregnancy?
Pregnancy glow- we have all heard about it. But how real is it? Does the skin of pregnant woman really glow??
Let's take a look.
In the nine months of pregnancy, your body undergoes many changes, from varicose veins to dark spots to even acne.

Pregnancy hormones can change your hair and skin texture, giving you fuller lips, a glowing complexion, and thicker hair. How real is the pregnancy glow?
Pregnancy glow is not merely a mythical phenomenon attributed to the happiness that some women experience during pregnancy. Pregnancy glow occurs when the face appears flushed and the skin glows.
During pregnancy, glowing skin is most evident during the second trimester, although not all women will experience it. Other (admittedly less exciting) skin changes during pregnancy may occur including acne, rashes, itchiness, and melasma [1].
What Is Pregnancy Glow?
The pregnancy glow is the appearance of radiant, glowing skin on the face during pregnancy. This is a real pregnancy symptom that leaves some pregnant women appearing flushed and glowing.
Pregnancy glow can be attributed to a number of factors, including fluctuating hormone levels, increased blood flow, and excessive oil production [2].
What Causes Pregnancy Glow?
Despite the fact that many people believe that pregnancy glow is the result of sheer happiness, there are several biological factors that contribute to glowing skin during pregnancy, including the following [3]:
- Hormone fluctuations
- Increased blood flow
- Increased oil in your skin
- Skin stretching
- Heat rashes
- An aggravation of pre-existing skin conditions

How long does pregnancy last and when does it begin?
It is not possible to predict when you will begin to feel the pregnancy glow. However, you may experience this glow when your body is undergoing the greatest level of changes, especially during the second trimester.
After giving birth, the glow of pregnancy and its underlying causes disappear, and your skin regains its normal appearance [4].
Is it true that all pregnant women have a pregnancy glow?
Although every woman experiences hormone fluctuations during pregnancy, this does not necessarily mean everyone will have a pregnancy glow. It does not indicate that something is wrong if you do not experience the pregnancy glow.
Instead, it could indicate that your skin reacts differently to what is occurring in your body as a whole.
Pregnancy may also cause the following skin effects:
Pregnancy acne: It is common for pregnant women to experience pregnancy acne when their oil glands produce an excessive amount of sebum. Not only does this result in shiny skin, but it can also contribute to blemishes.
What to do: As usual, you should wash your face twice daily, but you may need to use oily skin products during pregnancy. Consult your doctor about safe products to use.
Pregnancy mask: Pregnancy mask is another pregnancy-related skin condition that affects some women and not others. It refers to brown spots on the skin caused by hyperpigmentation as the result of an increase in melanin production in the skin during pregnancy.
During pregnancy, these blotches disappear when hormone levels decrease, however, exposure to the sun may worsen them [5].
What to do: You can prevent this by wearing sunscreen every day.

On A Final Note...
The pregnancy glow is one of many changes you may experience during pregnancy. There are many reasons these things happen, so it's safe to say pregnancy glow isn't a myth - but if you do not have it, don't be alarmed.
