Is Eating Grapes During Pregnancy Safe?
Eating grapes during pregnancy is shrouded in controversy. Many people say that it is perfectly safe and others argue that it is best to avoid grapes during pregnancy. Now we cannot get to the truth of the matter unless we take a closer look at the nutritional benefits and side effects of grapes on pregnant women. There are certain foods to avoid during pregnancy like instant noodles, alcohol, papaya etc. But grapes do not technically figure in the traditional list of foods to avoid during pregnancy.
However, some scientific researches have raised fingers on eating grapes during pregnancy. In fact, raisins, which are dried grapes have also been labelled as foods to avoid during pregnancy. The main bone of contention is the high amounts of resveratrol present in grapes. This chemical can cause toxicity for the expectant mother. But eating grapes during pregnancy can also give you vital nutrients like Vitamin A and C too.

To understand whether eating grapes during pregnancy is safe or not, let us take a closer look at its side effects on a pregnant woman.
Side Effects Of Grapes On Pregnant Women
Black Grapes
Black grapes are particularly problematic for pregnant women. It is believed that the skin of black grapes becomes non-digestible by the weakened digestive system of a pregnant woman. That is why, pregnant women should avoid black grapes.
Acidity
Grapes are very acidic especially when they are sour. And pregnant women are anyway prone to heartburn. That is why, acidity can be caused if pregnant women eat too many grapes. This might lead to nausea and vomiting as well.
Diarrhea
Eating too many grapes increases stomach heat. So this can lead to loose motions and diarrhoea in pregnant women. Diarrhoea during pregnancy is a dangerous condition as it makes you loose fluids from your body.
Toxicity
The main problem with eating grapes during pregnancy is that they contain high amounts of resveratrol. This chemical can be potentially toxic for the hormonally imbalanced pregnant women. Resveratrol poisoning can cause several complications during pregnancy. However, you need to eat a lot of grapes at once to suffer from this condition.
So finally we can conclude that eating grapes during pregnancy should not be a problem unless you eat lots of them. You should definitely limit your consumption of grapes during pregnancy. Also, never have grapes empty stomach or else you will suffer from acid reflux.
