Are The Drugs You Take Pregnancy Safe?

Here are some categories of drugs that are pregnancy safe and certain others for which you need your doctor's advice.

1. Pain Relievers: When we are talking about pain relievers then it mainly paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen. Unless and until you are allergic to on of these drugs, they can be taken in case of fever and aches. Having said that it is not prudent to pop painkillers for minor discomfort especially when you are pregnant. Among pain killers Nimusilid should never be taken while you are expecting.
2. Emergency Drugs: If you have a prior health condition like asthma then it becomes difficult to stop using it during pregnancy. However you need not fret because most life saving drugs for are pregnancy safe specially for respiratory disorders. For a healthy pregnancy you need blood to be oxygenated and they help in that process; also it is a spray so it is not retained in the system.
3. Prenatal Vitamins: Most vitamins that are prescribed to you depending on your blood report are good for you. Otherwise all water soluble prenatal vitamins are safe because if you get an overdose it is excreted from the body. Fat soluble vitamins (A, E D and K) must be taken only with the doctor's advise to determine the dosage that you need.
4. Hormonal Supplements: If you are diabetic or have developed gestational diabetes then you might have to continue with your dosage of insulin. The dose might also be increased depending on the condition of your prenatal health. Thyroid hormone too needs to be controlled and thus the drugs related to it are pregnancy safe.
5. Antibiotics: If you develop any bacteria related infection during your pregnancy then it is important for you to know antibiotics are not over the counter medicines nor are they always pregnancy safe drugs. Some older families of antibiotics like Penicillin, Amoxicillin, Erythromycin and Azthitromycin are safe. But there are many new hybrid antibiotics that are not tested on pregnant women; stay away from these to maintain a healthy pregnancy.
6. Cough Syrups: Be very wary of cough syrups because most of them have a very high alcohol content that can damaging to your foetus. So go for more herbal remedies like honey, basil and ginger if you have cold.
